I know this one is a little different to the first two, as there are lots of these films. I guess some people might consider one of the other installments their favourite, especially in the case of Alien 3; but for the purposes of this mini series I've sorta started, well compare the two that are generally considered as classics.
My two cents
I guess this sorta comes down to horror vs action at a basic level. In my case I would almost always prefer a slow burn horror, that's rife with tension and strong performances; but I don't here. I have to give the nod to the badass action blockbuster, and as badass action blockbusters go, there are few better. Aliens is a complete blast of a film from start to finish, whereas Alien, damn fine film that it is, has simply never resonated as well with me as it does with most punters.

Aliens is one of the best action films ever made.
Alien, however, is one of the ten best films ever made.
No contest. Scott all day.

I should also point out that I think the assembly cut of Alien 3 is a more thematically resonant film than Aliens.

Strange reaction here, I like both but don't like either that much and for different reasons:
Alien is a joyless experience imo, that thing that sort of basically crept into horror at this time where the scares are just agonizing to watch and go through, they're inflicted on you and brutalize you. I think Halloween was the first time I ever really noticed it (though I don't hold it against that movie). It definitely works in Alien but I don't like feeling that way much.
Aliens is a fine film too but tbh I never thought that series needed to go on after Alien and continue.........and continue......and continue.......
Alien for me

Alien is an incredible slowburner, a film of great eeriness and haunting imagery, and I just love how there's no clear protagonist throughout most of it until Ripley just happens to emerge as one.
But Aliens just pulls me in even deeper. It's just a miraculous feat of cinematic entertainment and storytelling that simply clicks with me a tiny bit more.

Alien is one of the greatest horror films of all time. Aliens is one of the greatest action films of all time. Alien 3 (whichever rendition you want to talk about) is utterly flawed and I'm taking off my belt and taking names!
For my pick-- Alien. Though, I've probably seen Aliens 2x as much because it is just so god damn fun!
