I LOVE this performance. I thought she did such a good job carrying this character study and presenting us this unstable woman (who probably suffered from bipolar disorder) and I like that she gave her a unique sense of awkwardness and dryness that I hadn't seen before but was so believable.

She's an underrated actress in general too and an exceedingly smart one.
The performance is one of my favorites to talk about in how the Oscars nowadays are meaningless - arguably the very best performance of that year had 0 chance to get nodded because of who released it. It has not always been that way - this is far more prevalent in our recent era and there was nothing she could do - she couldn't campaign, The Orchard couldn't orchestrate or buy a campaign for her - I wonder how many saw it then even.........it's scandalous really, it's exhibit A in what's wrong.
Her work is completely from the ground up - so you see multiple sides of her, not just the big scenes - you see her funny, smart, vulnerable, but instead of that adding up to a total person you see how those elements all interfere with another and she diminishes - her intelligence, humor, vulnerability merely cause her to be displaced more and more......the film is ingenious in showing how many things act as a surrogate for the camera or microphone - she overhears fragments of things which upset her in the office etc., she looks in background mirrors or through glass windows that pick up her pending breakdown too (like a camera), things catch the corners of her eyes in life that upset her she's receiving info like a lens - she has information overload all the time.
When she is alone with someone she can't really connect - only with the TV camera - her job - can she control the environment - how she is presenting herself, how people are communicating with her and her back to them............. which of course is ironic because her on camera career is out of her control but also because that shows her at her most revealingly troubled etc.

I really wanted to love this performance, but it honestly did nothing for me. It's clear Hall is giving it her all, but I feel she was given such awful material that it basically hamstrung her the whole way through.

I thought she was excellent in it too. It was a damn fine year for leading actress and she was easily one of the five best.

I don’t think Hall got the recognition she deserved for this performance. She totally transformed herself into Christine Chubbuck, from her quirky mannerisms to her isolated depression.

Good observations, pacinoyes. She really made every scene count. It's a very thorough performance. I love that you point out the use of mirrors and windows. I noticed that too.

I have to agree. I love the voice and mannerisms she used. She had to have studied not only Chubbuck, but depression and bipolar disorder for this role. Too much of it rang true. When her mother checks on her and she's wearing a nightgown and clearly experiencing a low, depressive episode, but she's got this faint smile on her face at the same time... that was spot-on. I just saw that critics really praised her performance and rightfully so.

Honestly, I think it seemed more like borderline personality disorder; I think Rebecca Hall even name-dropped it in an interview as a possibility. Bipolar disorder from my understanding there is a bit of gradual onset to mania followed by a terrible depressive episode whereas BPD the emotions can shift as fast as the flick of a light switch. Perhaps this scene from Fatal Attraction is an extreme example but considering how that movie was supposed to end (look up the alternate ending) I think it's a fair comparison. She was my win for that year. If she had a decent distributor behind her (A24 maybe?) she likely would've gotten a nomination. I remember I watched this and Kate Plays Christine relatively close together and there was a tiny clip of Chubbuck giving an interview. The only one that exists and she really seemed to nail the voice and her posture. She likely used Sally Quinn's article in the Washington Post from that time period and that footage as a jumping point to create a lot of her character.

I was going by what her brother said, but I think you may be right. BPD seems more fitting. Just speculating. No expert here. Thanks for posting that clip. The real Christine definitely had very particular mannerisms. I too wonder what she was thinking, as that man said. To me, it's one of the most disturbing/fascinating live television moments. And what is also interesting is people who worked there said she seemed exceedingly happy that day.

Sort of OT, as I haven't seen Christine, but I wondering if you've ever read Kate Chopin's "The Awakening," Carrie? When I was in high school reading the novel, I envisioned Rebecca Hall as Edna Pontellier ( Vicky Cristina Barcelona had just been released and I was really taken with her). I still think she'd make a fine choice for the role if a proper film adaptation were ever to be made.

In my opinion, she had made her decision on what she was going to do and how she was going to do it, and this was the end to all of her troubles. That would explain her mood.

It was years ago, but I think Rebecca Hall would be good casting, sure. I actually wasn't taken with Hall in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but THIS performance impressed me tremendously.

She hits a few false notes but the sum is mighty impressive and I just wish that the performance was surrounded by a film of similar caliber.

Just re-watched this the other night on Netflix and this dude totally gets it ^ ..........should have been the Andrea Riseborough of her day actually ......for anybody who hasn't seen it.........please do.........

She's one of the most underrated actresses right now. I hope she gets more recognition soon.
