If I understand it is simply a database keyword among a lot of them, it is a database, you could already ask imdb all movies with a women director (or movie with female nudity or movie with the title that include the main character name, etc...), it does seem based on what people want to create list of movie of, female made movies was probably simply one of those.
Without reading an article you would probably have never knew about it. Is it different that googling women made movie 2017, woman directed movie, etc... and finding people made list of them ?

So what does this amount to? A small "F" icon in each film's page? Or is it just gonna be a keyword?

So what does this amount to? A small "F" icon in each film's page? Or is it just gonna be a keyword? For the moment is simply a keyword, if you click on Moana for example and keyword you will see F-rated among the hundreds of them: www.imdb.com/title/tt3521164/keywords?ref_=tt_ql_stry_4If you are looking for movies with Roosters, talking crabs, or having a lot of female element to it, IMDB will give Moana in is list. on the movie main page itself, I do not see anything different: www.imdb.com/title/tt3521164/It is an easy to have a list of over 20,000 movies on IMDB that involved women in prominent roles for people that want such list.

well on second thought, it's basically useless if it's just a keyword. Hiding away the f-rating in a list of largely meaningless keywords only highlights that IMDB doesn't give a shit. The idea is great, the execution is horrible.

cornnetto Well, if that's the case, then that's almost nothing at all. Like you said, they already have similar keywords.

The idea is great, the execution is horrible. It will probably evolve to something better, but keyword are not 100% useless, it is still an easy way for someone to get a list of all the heavily involved women movies to be released, for example: www.imdb.com/search/keyword?keywords=f-rated&sort=release_date,asc&mode=detail&page=1&release_date=2017%2C2017&ref_=kw_ref_yr If you have a blog and want a list like that, for those 20 women directed movie to look at this year, or anyone that want to buy movie ticket for them, IMDB is a database after all. There is already that platform, for the F-rating that is using IMDB as a source with a better presentation that exist: f-rated.org

Eh. The idea isn't bad but the execution seems kind of stupid, which is nothing new with IMDB.

Without reading an article you would probably have never knew about it. Is it different that googling women made movie 2017, woman directed movie, etc... and finding people made list of them ? That's not true. You could search for the keyword "female director" which isn't an accurate search but simply a list of films where people thought it was important to add the keyword female director. It shows you an extremely skewed picture because you get no Denise, no Akerman, no Riefenstahl, no anyone: www.imdb.com/search/title?count=100&keywords=female-director&sort=num_votes,desc Also it's not about a search option to find movies directed by women, that would even potentially be useful. They'll give the F (which is not a search function but an extra label) to "Films either written or directed by women [...or] if they “feature significant women on screen in their own right.". The last part sounds like the Bechdel test and the bechdel test is a joke. In the end I really don't see what good this should do. It creates an unescesarry barrier and it's a condescending label, an extra pat on the back just for being a woman. In the end if women want to really make it in the film world men have to watch these films aswell. I mean here is what Chantal Akerman had to say about that: "I wrote a story that I liked. Everybody thought it was political. But it was a normal love story. It's not a feminist movie. I'm not saying it's a gay movie. If I did, then you go to it with preconceived notions."

Well F also will be innacurrate, and will only be the list of films where someone thought to add the keyword F, or triple F, etc... You can put female director keyword to the movies missing it.
I'm not sure what is the difference between a search option and a extra label, but keyword/label was always what I meant and yes it create for you when you search an option.
I'm not sure in what way it create a barrier (I get the condescending part thought), I'm also not sure about the Akerman part and the preconceived notions with giving an easy way to find every movie writing or directed by womans, if people have preconceived notion about movie like that, that rating say nothing about political or anything like that content wise, just gender of some people who did it.

I think IMDB itself has a hand in this not just users who can add it at will, so far more than 22.000 movies have been marked F: www.imdb.com/search/keyword?keywords=f-rated&mode=detail&page=1&ref_=kw_ref_key&sort=moviemeter,asc and it's the 5th most popular keyword after like a day or so... Also it can be pretty much given out at will. Directed or written by a woman is pretty clear but what does "featuring significant women on screen in their own right" even mean? How do you want to determine that and who decides? My favorite film is actually written by a woman and she is the only character in the film that has more than 15 min. screentime (she's on screen 98 % of the time or so) but it got no F rating. Now I don't necesarily want it to get an F-rating because I think it's a pretty stupid idea but nontheless it proves just how dumb this is because the film in question, The Green Ray, is among the most highly regarded films of all time (voted in the top 300 on Sight and Sound's ballot). An F-rating means nothing of the sorts. A woman is just as likely as a man to write or direct a trashy, cliche filled film that misrepresents one or both genders as a man. Much more effective than an F-rating (which isn't effective at all) would be to simply lead people to watch good films... like The Green Ray for instance. Why not give films a Sight and Sound top 588 label or a TSPDT top 1000 label? The percentage of female directors among highly acclaimed films is much higher than among summer blockbusters or Oscar nominees. Likewise they are pretty rare to echo preconceived notions or cliches about women or men which conventional films do all the time. I mean 2 among the 10 most popular F-rated titles are currently 50 Shades of Grey and there are only 2 50 Shades of Grey movies...

Well sure like any keyword, the rating already existed by a group so maybe they are doing it or that IMDB staff had access to a list already to automate it, I just did try to add it to see what will happen, I would a good 6 month before judging accuracy, you need to let time for people to do it, it has been only 2 day's like you said and already 22k movies are tagged. The issue about top like those is that they tend to change all the time, so if a movie quit the list you need to remember to go delete a tag, I'm not sure it respect the logic of the database, dated list like: www.imdb.com/list/ls033359070/ work well for those. But you can probably add those label and do it, I think. Well sure but a lot of people want list of movies made or featuring women (just google top female movie with a year, or coming up, etc...) a database keyword is just a tool for people that want to generate list of movies to be able to do so, it does not have any notion of quality attached to it.

I don't care enough about this for it to ruin my day or anything, but I think it's a bit condescending. The idea should also be for female filmmakers to receive the same respect and treatment as male filmmakers. I'm not sure being singled out for having a vagina is the way to achieve that. Still it's probably IMDb trying to hold on to some relevance. Zzzzzz...
