This seems like a well trodden path for an actor like Crowe. He's used to a certain llifestyle that used to come with big paydays for major studios (It's how he could afford to become part-owner of an Australian Rugby team). He's no longer considered a particularly bankable asset by major studios, so it's either downsize considerably with "character actor" paydays (which to be fair, he is also doing with things like Boy Erased), or take these super-generic films from independent studios and financiers that pay really well for his name recognition and the chance to be a lead in films. From DeNiro to Pacino to Nic Cage to John Cusack, a lot of stars who used to enjoy the perks of leading major studio projects, often end up going this route.
I feel Crowe was probably really banking on that whole "Dark Universe" franchise thing to pay off, as that's the only type of film project where he could rely on to get big paydays from studios.

Russell Crowe hasn't been great in anything - anything - approaching 20 years now - and while he can be serviceable/fine that happened to him in his mid 30s.......that's awfully early to start on your career downturn.
I like him and he did some really special work as a younger man, but the free pass he mostly gets (including those fat suit clips as Ailes which look funny to me) seems a bit much.

To the best of my knowledge, Master And Commander, Cinderella Man and 3:10 To Yuma were not 20 years ago. He was great in those roles(even if he played it slightly too mawkish in CM), and it's hard to think of anyone who could have played those roles better. He was even giving a committed performance in American Gangster...his character just suffered from being far less interesting than the actual gangster.
Up until around 2007, Crowe was considered by many to fairly be maybe the best working actor in the business. Denzel Washington had that same rep (and still does), which is why American Gangster was something of an event when it came out. With DDL barely working, it was the closest pairing to the DeNiro/Pacino match-up in Heat that could be made.
Crowe doesn't get any "pass".He's no longer seen as arguably the best actor in the business. No one is putting him in any GOAT debates. He seems more than accurately rated at the moment. A guy who had a great stretch from the late 90's to late 2000's, who has settled into cruise control, but still seems capable of doing something great if he puts his mind to it.

I'm not gonna stand for this The Nice Guys erasure. And he's aces in The Water Diviner, although I think his direction really is the selling point for that movie.

Well I said "approaching" 20 years - and he sucks in Cinderella Man imo, good not great in the other two actually.
He wasn't remotely the best actor in the business in 2007 so right there he was getting a big pass .......he has maybe 4 great performances Romper Stomper, The Insider, Proof, Gladiator in a decade run ........maybe 5 LA Confidential/A Beautiful Mind if I'm being nice..........he turned 35.......downward turn. I start and end him before you it seems......... I'm literally saying he's not capable of anything great anymore .......if he does it, I'll apologize to him.
I'd like to see him do it........it doesn't make me happy to see him fail..........I'm pulling for him.

Well, that's your opinion. Lot's of people have a different opinion on how often Crowe has been exceptional.
He was considered by many to be arguably the best actor in the business circa 2007.That's just a statement of reality based on a decade of unbroken acclaim for his performances. Not by you obviously, but your opinion isn't the decider either

Are we going to pretend like 3:10 to Yuma never happened? Was he not slaying in Boy Erased just last year!?

Yeah....when you consider things like Nice Guys and Boy Erased, Crowe is still deservedly a prestige actor. He's fallen off from his peak days (peak Crowe would never have let Les Misrables and The Mummy happen), but he's never sunk to the depths of someone like DeNiro.

Robert De Niro has been great a couple times in the last few years alone - heck Robert De Niro in The Intern where he's just good is arguably better than Crowe in anything in a long time.
De Niro is 75............Crowe is like 55......De Niro he was in F'n Goodfellas at 50 - he was in Awakenings....they are not comparable. One of them has ~15++ great performances, one has maybe 5.
.....that post is precisely what I'm talking about with his "pass" - The Nice Guys.............oh brother.

I think you give DeNiro (among others you favor from his era) a pass, and are extra harsh on many younger actors (like Crowe) hailed as greats. Hey, you love those 70's guys + Brando (as do many people), but not everyone gives them your unfettered pass.
I don't think a single performance DeNiro has given in the last 20 years comes close to cracking his top 20. He can still get awards recognition based on his legend status and appearing in the occasional prestige project , but he is completely a shell of the actor he once was. I truly think it'll be a small miracle if Scorsese can wake DeNiro up from his slumber in The Irishman.
DeNiro, by the standards of what he was once capable of, has not been "great" in over 20-25 years. He's been solid, amusing, serviceable and many variations on the word OK. But I'm not gonna overrated him for something like The Wizard of Lies, just because it's prestige TV.
DeNiro has gone from being one of the most electric and dynamic actors who ever liived, to a competent, if somewhat boring character actor. If ever any actor was reliant upon the excesses of the method to maintain his ability to be great", it was DeNiro.

I'm not being harsh on Crowe, but to say he hasn't fallen as low as De Niro is specious reasoning at best since De Niro scaled heights far higher too. I mean you'd call Wizard of Lies overrating him but we have to be nice to Crowe for the Nice Guys and Boy Erased? Come on that's not right......
Do I think De Niro has work that approaches his greatest work ........well that's a different discussion but that's not a discussion that puts a fine, limited, 10 year run actor like Crowe in comparison with a GOAT level actor like De Niro either. Like I said at 50 De Niro was doing great stuff......at 50 Crowe was drinking a lot of beer......and not doing great stuff.
The 70s guys get a pass because they earned their pass and Crowe has earned my respect - but again, not equivalents.......and I just think he's done being great - hopefully not - nothing to do with De Niro at all really.
