Certainly a question I'd like to pose.
I've always liked Dalton. Possibly my favorite Bond . Classically trained, movie star handsome...he's always been considered good, and has been famous most of his career. From holding his own with Peter O'Toole, Katherine Hepburn and Anthony Hopkins in his movie debut The Lion in Winter, to playing slyly camp villains in Flash Gordon and The Rocketeer, to investing James Bond with introspective pathos long before Daniel Craig thought of it....he's certainly got a good range.
I've watched him on two idiosyncratic shows I've recently seen on streaming platforms....Penny Dreadful and Doom Patrol. Watching them, he clearly has an instrument...a facility, a power, a gravitas, that's comparable to some of the UK's most esteemed older classically trained actors...Patrick Stewart, Ian Mckelllen etc.
He has never gotten that type of kudos, even though his whole career people have acknowledged he's pretty good. Wonder if being seen as a matinee idol type for much of his career held back the level of esteem he earned. Never quite got the "baity" roles, and got a lot of genre stuff. But just watching his recent stuff, it feels like he's reached a level yet to be fully exploited. And the dude is robust and well preserved. He's 73, but looks like he's in his 50's

Not good enough really and the UK acting tradition is too steep to entertain him as "most" underrated. On the other hand I like his Bond too and think it predates Craig in several ways but UK underrated is so odd because its also at what level are you arguing it - like I always say Nicol Williamson was that, but he was acclaimed clearly just underrated.......ok, let's go down a bit, Hugh Grant........but he's more acclaimed than Dalton.............well what about oh I don't know, John Hannah etc. and on and on.....
But in general I'd say somewhat underrated yes - he's that strange thing, probably could have played a lot, didn't get to play a lot and the big role he got more or less didn't work out for him even if in retrospect he does foreshadow Craig and there was something there to like.....

Yeah...I think it's less to do with ability with Dalton, as it is with him not getting the right parts. Ironically, if he'd been less handsome (like Hopkins or Stewart or Mckellen), the meaty "character roles" would have likely come his way, and he would'nt have played so many variations of "handsome cad", that sustained his career.
Like I said, you'd probably have to see his recent work (Penny Dreadful, Doom Patrol) to maybe acknowledge that he's operating with the same sort of twinkly classically trained wit, gravitas and nuance that Stewart and Mckellen have, but with more vibrancy, because he seems younger than he is.
But there are so many damned shows in existence, I can understand why one wouldnt go out if their way to commit to two new ones just to watch the evolution of Timothy Dalton's screen capability. But I should hope his work in these recent shows leads to offers of work in films or shows of wider audiences. The man has Emmys and Oscars in him if he's given the role.

He's great, but he's no Richard Attenborough.  I think Dalton's interesting because even though he was a good Bond, he just has the look of a villain more. It's like Lee van Cleef -- he could play heroes if he wanted, but he just excelled at baddies. Dalton's dashing but he could play a fantastic cad, and that's what he made his wheelhouse. On a serious note, if we're talking about Britain's most underrated actor in proportion to his talent/awards status/general respect by his peers, Stephen Dillane would definitely be up there. A Tony winner with a lot of acclaim from the stage, has done very well for himself on TV (Stannis Baratheon, Thomas Jefferson, the dude from The Tunnel), and he's starting to crop up more and more in films. His personality strikes me as very much in the vein of Daniel Day-Lewis and Mark Rylance: guys who eschew the limelight and treat it as a job, but are greatly revered for their work ethic. I think that all Dillane needs is "that" role in a film and he's off to the races. |

He's won a BAFTA, Tony and been nominated for an Emmy. Yes he doesn't get the DDL or Rylance level of acclaim and fanboys don't whimper over him, but he's been decently acknowlged by his industry. To date, Dalton has gotten nada in terms of major awards or nominations. Hard to think of a major British actor that's been around as long as Dalton as good as him, who has gotten no significant awards recognition in his career. Hope that can change for him |

I think one of the most underrated actors is Rupert Everett. Everret has been nominated for two Golden Globes and two BAFTAs. He's been nomImated by the London Film Critics Circle 5 times, and won twice(one of those wins was this year for The Happy Prince). Everret is a three time Olivier award nominee (UK equivalent to the Tonys). I don't think Everret is especially underrated, particularly in the UK. He's revcieved a fair amount of acknowledgement as an actor. |

Haven't seen him in much unfortunately and would like to research and watch what are viewed as his best performances some time. He's good in Lion in Winter and his Wuthering Heights and is my second favorite Bond behind Connery.

Timothy Dalton is such a boss. Loved him as Bond and most recently on Penny Dreadful . I would say he definitely does not get the credit he deserves so you could most certainly make a case that he is the most underrated Brit actor.

Quality actor, I liked hi Bond. They say his Bond was the closest one to the books (I couldn't say. I've only read 2-3). He surely deserves more credit than he gets.
