Nolan. I don't think his status will ever be as legendary as Spielberg's, but I don't think any other filmmaker has achieved a comparable amount of success from films both critically-acclaimed and commercially-successful. Also like Spielberg, Nolan may have the most "household name" of any director of his generation, save for maybe Tarantino.

Spielberg's most enduring characteristic (his style can and now regularly is aped) is his longevity. No moviemaker in history has remained at the top of the game in terms of box office success for as long as he has. As soon as someone goes 30 years successfully giving the masses what they want let me know, because they'll then be within a decade of matching what he's done, and be in line for the title.
