Butler again....this time from his Dune co-star Josh Brolin. Interviewer asks Brolin if there's a younger actor that has any reverence for and Brolin says Butler is the one. Says Butler works as hard as any actor he's ever seen work. Yeah, you're definitely right about this. He reminds me of some people in college who were relentless about studying. I'd be in my dorm room Freshman year most days at 2:00pm with a pizza (or some other takeout, despite having no money) and some DVDs of Mulholland Dr., Eyes Wide Shut, The Last Days of Disco, half a season of 24, spending hours on youtube for the first time in 2006 giving zero fucks about schoolwork, and they'd be leaving the library at 11:45 pm on a Saturday. I thought everyone else was on adderall, and maybe they were, but I have to admire Butler's commitment to his artistic pursuit. Even more than the gunners who could stand Orgo way more than me.

But more seriously, Butler is going to get great recommendations at this rate. You can see even Chalamet's perked up, like "I can't fuck around".

Yeah, it's pretty crazy how stellar Butler's reputation has become in such a short space of time. It's almost weird hearing other actors talk about him like he's early 90's Daniel Day-Lewis or Gary Oldman in terms of commitment to the craft.

One of this year's Best Actor frontrunners, Paul Giamatti says Denzel Washington is a genius, and dreams of working with him. He's seems to to think it'll never happen though. I'm sure it can happen for Giamatti one day though.

Denzel's been praising those guys (and Hackman) as his influences in interviews since the late 80's at least. So it's not exactly news. It always made sense though....they're his direct forebearers. Must feel great (and maybe a bit weird also) for him to surpass them in esteem and stature. It's like growing up and realising you can now beat up your dad.
Interestingly enough, the one main guy from the 70's generation that Denzel has conspicuously not praised much, if at all, as an influence, is Jack Nicholson. Denzel was/is a stage snob, the actors he admired most all had significant stage backgrounds. Nicholson didn't, and I've never really heard Denzel cite him as an influence like with DeNiro, Pacino, Hoffman and Hackman.

In addition to that FAUX-GOAT ^ praising IRL ACTUAL GOATs - DePac here's Peter Sarsgaard mentioning them in a "good / bad way" not unlike how you see about Brando and spawning imitators ........but also praises Mescal, Ronin Which actors do you admire today? Paul Mescal. His sexuality is powerful and cool, and I believe him so much on the screen. He’s very real. That film he did with the daughter, Aftersun, was a Mount Olympus of acting. Saoirse Ronan is great, too. I think that the actors coming up in that age group are so different to my generation. How? Perhaps growing up watching real things on YouTube or Instagram feeds has given younger people a taste for reality. My generation was fixated on male legends like Pacino and De Niro, and actors used to base a lot of their acting on other movies, so we were imitating others, which made what we did less real. That’s not the case any more, which is great.www.theguardian.com/film/2024/feb/11/peter-sarsgaard-pacino-de-niro-memory-batman-jackie-lost-daughter-dead-man-walking-maggie-gyllenhaal

Gary Oldman lists his favorite actor at 49:10. He happens to be a 94 year old who slaps homeless men who insult his wife.

Gary Oldman lists his favorite actor at 49:10. He happens to be a 94 year old who slaps homeless men who insult his wife. That's awesome . I remember as far back as IMDB, I always used to argue that Hackman could and maybe should be considered the greatest actor of that 70's era over all the others, and certain other people used to insist that there was only a Big 4 ( DeNiro, Pacino, Nicholson, Hoffman) and that Gene wasn't in it. He was somewhere in the bleachers with Robert Duvall as back-up dancers to this supposed "Big 4" . My, how times change. I feel the appreciation for Hackman has only deepened over the years ( at the expense of Hoffman most I feel) and it's wonderful to see an actor as revereved as Oldman single him out in such a way. One of my other favorite stories about how other actors worshipped Hackman, was when Richard Harris and Michael Caine were feuding. Caine had compared himself to Hackman, whom he obviously admired deeply. Harris came back and said Hackman was a dangerous and intimidating actor, while Caine was as intimidating as Shirley Temple . Harris was obviously wrong about Caine and just wanted to cut him deep, but it's telling how much respect both those acting legends had for Gene. Also, Kevin Costner always says Hackman is the greatest actor he ever worked with. And he worked with prime Robert DeNiro in The Untouchables.

British and Irish actors like Cirian Hinds, Brian Cox, Brendan Gleeson, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hardy, Bill Nighy and Geoffrey Rush all named him as one of their heroes. The late great Christopher Lee loved him. People like Damon and Pitt have named Hackman as their favorite (Damon said he wanted to be an actor like Hackman) and he's really popular with character actors like William H. Macy, Gary Sinise and there is much more which I'm trying to think of from the top of my head. Greta Gerwig said he was her favorite actor ever.

I think that particular answer from Oldman is why you always have to raise your eyebrow at Oscar acting nominations being a "barometer"- in any way - of greatness........like Oldman talks about pacinoyes all-time #2 film The Conversation ........which was not a Hackman nomination (its always the ones you MISS that define an actor, not the ones you get)........and Hackman was more than DOUBLED in career Oscar nominations by Nicholson (12 to 5) and yet he is clearly "comparable" - imo - depending on many factors that o differ across people's personal tastes, metrics etc Like I could tell you Nicholson is a better actor..........that's a POV....... but I certainly could never tell you Nicholson is more than TWICE the actor Gene Hackman is ffs.............. ......

Denzel passing the big 70s actors in esteem and stature...I see the hilarity train is still going full bore. The DNA of those guys is imprinted in a sizeable chuck of American cinema's bedrock, while the brightest constellations this guy can muster in the firmament are Malcolm X and Training Day

Keeping with the Gene Theme , Hackman gave some unprompted praise to Denzel, years after they did Crimson Tide together, when he was on the Larry King show, basically using Denzel as a specific example of an actor he loved working with, because he had the "calibre" to keep up with him. I thought it was fascinating that of all the Great Actors he'd worked with across several generations, Denzel was the first example that came to mind for him to make that point. Larry King: You like being other people?Hackman: Yes, I like getting inside there and that interplay with other actors. I love that interplay with other actors. I love that---Denzel and people of that calibre that can really stay with you.Love the mutual respect these titans had for each other. Crimson Tide is one of the great acting two-handers, and watching those two guys go toe to toe is amazing. Almost felt like a passing of the torch moment as well.

Hmmmmm ....doesn't that mean it jut popped into his head at that particular moment and not anything more than that? Particularly because how Gene loves Scarecrow - filmography and all that ......but I'm sure he thinks Denzel is a wonderful actor...... let's ask Gene who was his main man .......oh look: "He was always a wonderful actor, but there's a difference between being wonderful and being great. Marlon Brando. What is it about Brando? He is our most sensitive actor and uses more of the feminine side of himself than anyone."

Pretty sure Hackman regards Crimson Tide as a major part of his filmography. He talks at length in this interview about how much he loved making the film and playing his character, Captain Frank Ramsey. www.cigaraficionado.com/article/gene-hackman-on-top-of-his-game-6161Brando was an Oscar winning legend before Hackman even started training as an actor. He would have been one of Hackman's idols, like he was for most of the American actors that emerged directly after him and trained in the method. That's not really news. I don't think they ever worked together though. Not properly. They were both in Superman, but never acted in any scenes together.

The "iconic" Keanu Reeves - nice guy.....sex-ayyyyyyyyyy af, cupcake eyes (um)........ "and yet" not particularly notable as an actor imo - and who, at 60 on his next birthday - ranks somewhere below Gary Cooper, Bradley Cooper, Clint Eastwood - and maybe Kevin Costner even - "L MAO" - praises the GOAT and sounds like he may be in love himself... Btw...... "I'm just a regular ass dude, like y'all" ..... ......
