[Paul Muni on Robert Donat's performance in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939)] The most magnificent performance I've ever seen on any screen. Not a false motion - not a wasted gesture. He is the greatest actor we have today.
Watching Maximilian Schell shoot a scene one day, Spencer Tracy said to Richard Widmark, "We've got to watch out for that young man. He's very good. He's going to walk away with the Oscar for this picture (Judgment at Nuremberg)." This is exactly what happened.

Well lets get this topic back on track. I don't know if this cool specifically, but speaking of Keanu, here's a nice and touching video with him talking about Patrick Swayze made just after his death. I rediscovered it a couple of a months ago, and it brought back the feels.

Lee clearly loved acting & was a film buff himself. Near the end he praised Tom Hanks for Big & Punchline, very interesting.

One of next years most exciting acting matchups - to me anyway - is my beloved Helen Mirren with her closest male "version" (though Anthony Hopkins could also be that) ....... my also beloved Al Pacino - combined age ~ 155 - in the awfully named "Sniff"...... This is pretty funny about Pacino kicking her off the set of Devils Advocate - and Pacino improvising this scene - see, that's a comedy too ..........(again) because he is you know great at comedy and it's all over his filmography - I'm going to dig up that thread one day about "when has Al Pacino ever been funny anyway - he only does drama!?".......... because that was a stupid low point in our history MAR Mirren also revealed that Pacino’s devotion to his craft once cost the studio extra money. According to The New Yorker, Pacino went off-script when he sang Frank Sinatra’s It Happened in Monterey. Mirren was once again impressed by Pacino’s skill as a performer.
“It’s just absolutely out there, surreal and brilliant,” Mirren said........ "This is revolution Kevin .......Viva la causa!" www.cheatsheet.com/entertainment/al-pacino-kicked-helen-mirren-devils-advocate-set.html/

Lady Gaga praising a whole bunch of actors but some of the big ones especially - Pacino (a lot) - but also signaling out Streep, Close and Hanks...... "I come from a culture of plenty," she continued. "The culture of plenty that I came from was because my ancestors worked so hard so that I could have a better life. And, in that life, I get to work with Al Pacino. And he taught me so much. For those who don't have the honor of knowing him, I'll tell you, he's everything that you want in your favorite actor to be. ... He's so talented, it's seeping out of his pores." "I've always looked up to Meryl Streep," Gaga said. "She is the greatest female actress of all time. Her commitment to her role is unparalleled. Glenn Close as well." "I have to say, one of my fellow Icon Award winners, Tom Hanks, I would love to work with Tom Hanks," she shared. "I think he is one of the most brilliant actors of all time." www.wusa9.com/article/entertainment/entertainment-tonight/lady-gaga-reveals-oscar-winner-she-wants-to-work-with-next-recalls-moment-she-knew-shed-made-it-exclusive/603-22f78e95-f8b5-414d-a656-7b085317d0e5

Another Denzel, Ethan Hawke had a really funny answer about him on the WTF podcast and it's something Maron always loves to reference while interviewing actors.

I just finished Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and found this video. Guinness teaching Richardson about how important it is to know the lens in the camera and the story of Guinness replacing a monologue with a frustrated gesture are cute. Spoilers for TTSS.

David Oyelowo has some strong praise for his Lincoln co-star Daniel Day-Lewis and Denzel Washington, saying he doesn't know how they do what they do, and citing There Will Be Blood and Malcolm X as his go to performances to watch whenever he plays a difficult role. He watches those two actors in those films to humble himself and see the level he aspires to reach. news.yahoo.com/david-oyelowo-oscar-voters-held-180000917.html

I love how Hopkins humanizes Olivier here - talking about his influence, his psychological make-up (perfectionism, fear) etc. - like I always say you can argue about the (English speaking) GOAT - DePac, Nicholson......... DDL (not quite for me but I get why people say it).........argue that "one day it will be DiCaprio" (or Phoenix)..........argue "it could have been PSH" but the discussion always starts with Brando / Olivier. Still.

@tyler Juliette Binoche is one of the classiest and nicest women in the business. She's well known for always praising her fellow actors and actresses.Even if she doesn't get along them , she would never call them out in public.

It's something that's rarely talked about and in Denzel's case especially, it's one of his greatest strength as an actor and it has becomes more and more evident as he got older. His spirituality, his faith in god and how he incorporates it in his acting to create and shape his characters. It's very often biblical with him (or he himself makes the analogy to it, in his process which is fascinating), there is often a religious message, a story of redemption, etc... and all of this is one of his driving force and it helps him to transcend himself. Using your faith (in god) in your acting is something that I usually feel a lot when I watch my favorites actresses (actresses in particular) from very religious (and demonstrative) countries like Brazil (Fernanda Montenegro) or Philippines (Nora Aunor) and their interviews on it are quite fascinating, even for a non particularly spiritual person like myself (but who cares). I don't know if Denzel has ever watched Kieślowski's Dekalog but it's made for him. He could have been the greatest preacher in America, luckily for us he decided (or god decided as he would probably thinks) that he would be the greatest actor in America and in some way he's both of those. His "motivational/spiritual" speeches that made a helluva numbers of views on Youtube seems to be very important and inspiring for many people.

Agreed, I think that's why especially his performance as Malcolm X is a little eerie at times, because he opened himself up a vessel for in his words "Malcolm's Spirit" to come in. There's Oscar winning biopic performances, and then there's that. He talked about it as well with the famous whipping scene in Glory. It helps him kind of transcend the performance he's giving in a way. He also writes biblical passages on his scripts obviously like he did for Training Day ("The wages of sin is death") and he did it recently for The Tragedy of Macbeth. Its helped carry him (in his mind/beliefs) throughout his career and the results speak for themselves I guess. Its also kind of crazy that no studio execs/producers ever thought about getting him to be in one of these biblical movies Hollywood tends to make from time to time. I mean he's a rare A-List Movie Star/Leading Man who wears his spirituality and talks about it alot. Being in a biblical movie would mean more to him than some of the other actors they get who aren't religious/spiritual. Maybe he might get that one day. To continue on with this thread topic, Ben Affleck recently gave an interview to Entertainment Weekly with Matt Damon promoting The Tender Bar and talked about how deceptively difficult it is to play the leading man (which I agree with..movie falls on your shoulders alot of the times) and that its stars like Denzel who make the leading man role admirable: ew.com/movies/ben-affleck-cover-story-tender-bar-matt-damon/

Maybe the most loving tribute to an actor ever filmed - for the great John Cazale - you have DePac - the GOATs, but also Hackman - not far behind those 2 - PSH - not to far off Hackman tbh, and some other big nanes too - Sam Rockwell, Steve Buscemi, Richard Dreyfuss and of course........great heartbreaking stories by (and about) Meryl Streep (@tyler ). If you've never seen - it's a must see - the full link is below and this will get yanked down soon I'm sure (it's 40 minutes long) Watch it - many interesting stories about why Cazale's so important - his theater career too including the play The Indian Wants The Bronx which made stars of him and Pacino (both won Obie Awards and it won Best Play) and set up The Godfather in a way - a full 4 years earlier (1968) and never gets talked about in the Pacino/Cazale relationship and friendship.....photo of them below in the play

The young actor who recently and tragically passed, Gaspard Ulliel, on why Marion Cotillard was his favorite actress to work with.
He says because she gives a lot to her partners in the scenes which I've picked up on from watching her and I think is an underrated quality. Even some of our GOATs are guilty of being selfish. It's followed up by a beautiful, tender moment between them in a film that illustrates this.

pacinoyes - This was truly beautiful - thank you so much for sharing with me. I definitely teared up during the Meryl parts. Toward the end of the movie - Pacino tells a story about how Streep behaved, lovingly, strong, selfless - towards Cazale at the end of his life - and he's obviously deeply moved by it and what he saw - and there's also the part of how De Niro (likely) paid to have Cazale in The Deer Hunter cast. In some ways - the movie is a tribute not just to Cazale but also Streep and De Niro too............also it gets into this weird thing that there are actors - GOAT level actors that have a long and complicated history with each other.........like Streep reuniting with De Niro and playing lovers or Pacino playing a death bed scene with Streep in AiA that had to overlap in some ways with Cazale (though different of course).........like things that weirdly overlap between Life & Art and you wonder how much goes into the scenes in such work........... given what you know about the gutwrenching personal stories the actors share. Beautiful movie......and stories........

It's followed up by a beautiful, tender moment between them in a film that illustrates this. I think actors being generous to their scene partners is immensely underrated. That function of feeling completely present with your scene partner is what grounds them in a scene and serves the movie as a whole. It's the most basic suspension of disbelief in a scene: these people are here together, saying these things, and reacting to each other. Now, it may not be as sexy as, say, an actor that milks the hell out of a close-up or pops a vein in their forehead in a shouting match, but without some generosity in a scene all of that effort will just look like that - effort. The dynamic between the characters is what matters, not which actor is out-actoring the other. Of course, there are times as well when it is beneficial to a performance and to a movie for an actor to not give their partners as much in the scene - Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood should run roughshod over most of his counterparts, and Ray should feel alien to Charlie for most of Rain Man - but in 98% of cases if you as an actor are standing out way too much in a scene it's probably not a great thing.
