I saw a thread like this on the IMDb boards and it seemed to be an even poll.

Both are excellent movies. Very tough poll. I'm gonna have to go for La La Land for now, just because. But Whiplash is amazing!

"Neither" should be an option.

Both are great, but La-La Land gets my vote, since I enjoyed it more overall.

Though I still really like Whiplash, a recent rewatch made it seem a lot more shallow than I remember. I suppose that tunnel vision makes sense in the context of the narrative, but it does shortchange the film a bit. La La Land is a lot more open in its thematic exploration, and it's better for doing so. Plus, I think La La Land is easily the better crafted film.

"Neither" should be an option. I don't know how to post gifs, but if I did, imagine the black guy from 'The Wire' shaking his head at you.

I think as a whole, Whiplash is a stronger and more confident piece of filmmaking. It might be a tad over-the-top in its portrayal of Fletcher, but it works perfectly if seen through Neiman's eyes, and Teller and Simmons are an incredible double-act (and I consider the latter co-lead). This is not to disparage La La Land, which is a gorgeous throwback to classic musical movie-making. Both films are masterfully rendered by Chazelle, who is perhaps the most searing directorial wunderkind since PTA hit the scene in '97.

Whiplash shows more interesting themes, but overall I think La La Land is a more interesting craft and more enjoyable to watch. So I'll got with LLL.

I'm surprised how close the two are. I figured LLL would be winning with a great margin.
Whiplash, for me. Left more of an impact, loved the ending, and it just felt more substantial (message-wise).

I voted for Whiplash. It simply slapped me in the face, halfway through I fell madly in love with it. And to think, I waited about ten months after its release to see it!

Whiplash is so one-dimensional and insignificant in comparison

La La Land, not even close. Whiplash is entertaining on a surface level, but it's ultimately overcooked nonsense.

Easily La La Land. At least it's worthy of its BP nomination.
