Deadline --Coppola was back in Venice last week with cuts from Megalopolis
The completed $140 million Megalopolis (Coppola’s own money) will shortly be offered to worldwide distributors/ Other news for those who missed it: Not only are we getting a making-of doc from Mike Figgis, and a graphic novel as mentioned above..... but also a novelization by Colleen McCullough (who curiously....died in 2015...).... also there's the new book about Coppola (The Path to Paradise) out in November that'll dive into Mega as well. Adam Driver praises Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed film Megalopolis, calling it the best shooting experience he's ever had. Coppola's financial freedom allowed him to have complete control over the film and make his own decisions. Driver describes Megalopolis as wild, imaginative, epic, and bold, expressing his excitement for audiences to see it.collider.com/adam-driver-megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola/

I have a horrible feeling it's going to be terrible, but will it be must-see, can't miss, get us to fucking Cannes already hype-worthy? Obviously.

I'm like almost certain that this will be pretty bad and 100% certain that it will be a box office bomb. Possibly one of the biggest of all time.
I understand why some directors are doing these all-stars cast, 3 hour+ epics. They are usually egomaniacs. What I don't understand is how studios are still financing them when almost none of them works out financially post-pandemic.

No wonder it’s getting made.

So you think this is gonna be something like Waterworld or Cleopatra or Alexander? Big ambitious projects that flopped because.... well.... they went out of style? Like Costner going out of style by 1995, big epics going out of style by 1963.... and Oliver Stone definitely going out of style by 2004. Is this what you're thinking?

Hmmmmmmmm theface.com/culture/adam-driver-interview-megalopolis-francis-ford-coppola-frances-ha What can you tell us about Megalopolis?
It’s kind of undefinable, which feels very general until you watch the movie. Then my answer will be perfect. There’s not a lot of precedent for it and it’s wild on a big scale, which is what’s really unique about it.
In the film, you play renegade architect Caesar. Can you describe him in one sentence?
He’s a visionary. He’s very much Francis [Ford Coppola], in a way, where he’s investigated every way of how people can do something and is trying not to get stuck on the right answer. That’s an idea that’s moving to me – and one that reflects Francis.

“It’s a bizarre mix of Ayn Rand, Metropolis, and Caligula. It’s unflinching in how batshit crazy it is”

I hope it's good, but I don't think this is the best cast Coppola could have corralled if the script was very strong. Adam Driver being anything close to a lead of a movie is a red flag at this point.

What's so hard to market??
"From the visionary director of The Godfather, The Godfather Part 2, The Conversation, Apocalypse Now, and Bram Stickers Dracula, another grounded cinematic masterpiece so undefinable that you have to experience."
Then you list the entire cast and boom.
You're welcome, studios, now buy this film.
