Which triumvirate of female actors do you personally prefer as a whole - the preeminent Americans or the preeminent Brits?

Redgrave belongs in the holy trinity, no? At her peak she left the other three in the shade.

Redgrave belongs in the holy trinity, no? At her peak she left the other three in the shade. Absolutely - I prefer her to everyone mentioned here save Close and Streep - but I don't think she's thought of with that sort of "national treasure" fondness in the UK that the other three Dames are - she's a rather controversial figure, à la Jane Fonda. Fitting that they're such close friends.

Streep wins this for the Americans single-handedly.

I love those british dames, but they have never done something as powerful or embodied a character so deeply like Streep did many times and Close did with perfection in Dangerous Liasions. Couldn't care less for Lange tho.

Streep is my favourite of the six, but the British comfortably take this as I really love those three actresses, whereas I just merely like Close and Lange overall.

As Parker Posey's character says in For Your Consideration, "I don't act for trophies." But, let's take a look at the awards breakdown for these women - OSCARSAmericans - 34 nominations and 5 wins. Brits - 17 nominations and 4 wins. EMMYSAmericans - 24 nominations and 9 wins. Brits - 23 nominations and 8 wins. TONYSAmericans - 6 nominations and 4 wins. Brits - 7 nominations and 3 wins. Triple Crown of Acting - Jessica Lange, Helen Mirren, and Maggie Smith have all completed it. Glenn Close is missing the Oscar; Judi Dench is missing the Emmy; Meryl Streep is missing the Tony. The UK equivalents... BAFTAS (Film only) Americans - 18 nominations and 2 wins. Brits - 31 nominations and 12 wins. BAFTAS (Television only) Americans - 0 wins and nominations. Brits - 22 nominations and 7 wins. (Smith has never won here!!!) OLIVIERSAmericans - 2 nominations and 0 wins. (Streep has never been nominated here.) Brits - 25 nominations and 8 wins. (Smith has never won here!!!) And only one Razzie nomination among them - for Mirren's performance in Winchester. Ouch.

The Americans easily. There's something way too cosy about the British Dames. Mirren is the edgiest of the bunch and that's only because she used to take her clothes off all the time in the 70's and 80's.
Replace Smith with Vanessa Redgrave, and it might actually be a competition for me.

Streep is the best of the group, but I've got all the three Brits ahead of Close and comfortably ahead of Lange. So the "queens" for me. If you'd oppose the British Ladies to les Grandes Dames de France Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert and Juliette Binoche I'd be inclined to go with la Tricolore probably.

Jane Fonda and Vanessa Redgrave are arguably the greatest actresses of both nations, but as I said in response to Allenism , their controversial politics/past statements leave many of their compatriots cold. The awards tallies for both of them: FONDAOscars: 7 nominations and 2 wins. Emmys: 4 nominations and 1 win. Tonys: 2 nominations and 0 wins. BAFTAS (Film): 7 nominations and 2 wins. No nominations for BAFTA Television or the Oliviers... REDGRAVEOscars: 6 nominations and 1 win. Emmys: 6 nominations and 2 wins. Tonys: 3 nominations and 1 win. BAFTAS (Film): 2 nominations and 0 wins. (How could the Brits possibly justify this?) BAFTAS (Television): 1 nomination and 0 wins. (See the pattern?) Oliviers: 3 nominations and 1 win.

Oh, this is hard! Streep is my favourite actress but I've never been keen on Lange. I'll go with my fellow Brits, not just to be patriotic but because I've seen Smith, Mirren and Dench perform in shows, so that adds to the appeal, if you see what I mean.

In all honesty there are probably as many Lange and Streep performances that I hate as like, and in the case of Glenn Close But No Cigar there are probably more I laugh at then love. Those three Brits, I don't exactly go crazy for any of them except Maggie Smith say prior to the 90s (and Helen Mirren prior to the 90s without her clothes on) but I think they all have a lot less bad to their name that I have beheld, and their peaks are probably just as high.

Lange, Smith, and Mirren are godly.
The rest have their moments, but ultimately their aura is much less divine. They're all good at crushing the roles they're good at though - often bitchface roles - which to their credit, is my type of entertainment.

Oh, I totally agree, but I have to admit that there's a hugely fascinating quality to Lange - something akin to Rampling, though not nearly as effective - I think it's that she openly admits to tapping into her personal depression to find that same darkness for her characters, and to me it's hugely evident in her best acting in American Horror Story. And I really admire that she never "coasted" on her beauty (out of all six of these women, she's really the only one who is "traditionally" pretty) - she's very daring in her choices, even if they don't necessarily "work."

Never been a fan of Lange except a couple of things, in m eyes she’s bad or in a different tone most of the time, Close, not always a fan, she’s too methodical for me, but loved her recent oscar turn, Streep adore her 80s run and realy like things she’s done prior and after but the last decade she’s been an absolute trainwreck, if I pick this group it would be based mostly on her but no. It’s about the queens for me. Smith from 60s to early 00s she was in top form, even in garbage like California Suite or Travels with my Aunt, Dench is like healthy salad but there are surprises here and ther and Mirren, actually really liked her transition from Caligula to Queen, but as Streep, the last few years have been dubious, so I pick this group but still not as satisfied because as someone mention above they in comfy zone most of the time, thry lack the wider filmography of someone like Streep.
