A very great filmmaker and I will never forget Vagabond in particular which gets more from that simple scene design/conception that it must set some kind of record - camera still, so close to that heartbreaking Bonnaire face - and then sharp, short, lacerating dialog you remember throughout the film - "Wandering? That's withering"
Not since Vivre Sa Vie had you seen that simple similar style in quite the same way - it was a style as a director that "over"-directors like Oliver Stone, Spike Lee, even their lessers like Adam McKay or someone like that would find utterly baffling.
RIP

A legend right up until the end. I really thought she might live forever.

Fuck. Not the news that I ever want to wake up to. Agnes was such a legendary figure and a genuinely incredible filmmaker. The art of cinema will never forget her. RIP.

Oh no, she seemed like a bundle of life right up to the end.
Just about a week ago I rewatched Cléo from 5 to 7 & Vagabond. She was such a highly interesting filmmaker, witty and fun.

It can never be a good day when it starts with news like this. Rest in power, Varda was truly one of the most singular voices in cinema

I had never seen a film of Varda before when I caught this couple as well on ARTE Monday the last week. Vagabond was solid enough, but I immediately fell in love with Cleo from 5 to 7. Such a wonderful film. RIP Agnes Varda

Wow, I had no idea, she was doing that poorly. I haven't seen all of her films, obviously but she's a great director. Vagabound is a superb film. I believe she made a documentary that premiered at Berlin last month, so we at least have another film to look forward to. RIP!!!

Beautiful words from Scorsese. That picture above, and the others Scorsese posted, with himself, Varda and De Niro, are from the Marrakech FF just a few months ago, where she received an honorary award, with a laudatory speech from Marty. They seemed to like each other very much, he and Bobby D. did send her some good wishes via JR's instagram account during the shooting of The Irishman. In a time when a lot is said and written about female directors, representation etc., all one has to say about Varda is that she was a remarkable filmmaker and person, a true loss for the world of cinema.
