Hmmm...I'm sure Netflix made a play for this film but A24 went with Apple+. Wondered if they felt it would get lost in the shuffle with Netflix Awards line-up or the stigma of Netflix would hurt its best chances on Oscar night. Not sure. Pretty much. Would you go with somebody who fumbled the bag during a freakin pandemic?

That's true.,,it's just interesting with the relationship Denzel has with Netflix is all but great pickup for Apple+ and if some of the rumors are true (to be honest seeing them on AwardsWorthy) could be their #1 film heading into next Oscar season.

Yeah, it is strange how Apple just came and swooped the film’s release rights up. I assume it was a matter of convenience however, and nothing to do with the film itself, however, which I’m absolutely sure will be a big Oscar player.

At least Netflix puts 2 films in BP in each of the last 2 years and afaik Apple has at best had Wolfwalkers (?) so far.......I mean, Netflix hasn't sealed the deal but so far Apple isn't in their league - this may change that - ............ when Netflix fumbles they are at least close to the goal line - Apple couldn't get Sofia Coppola's pic on the playing field in 2020 and of course Netflix killed Apple in viewership during the pandemic.

1. I think it’s really odd to still think there’s a “Netflix stigma” or they somehow “fumbled the bag” just because one of their films didn’t win BP.
2. I also think it’s odd to be surprised Apple picked this up when they have nearly as much money to spend on acquisitions as Netflix but are also giving an exclusive theatrical run prior to the film moving to their streaming service.

Tell me that Benicio del Toro is Duncan, Dev Patel is Malcolm and Rinko Kikuchi is Lady MacDuff, Brad Pitt is Banquo, Elliot Page is MacDuff while the Wachoski sisters are the witches.- Any way is Shakespeare and none care about races and sexes, just they could read their lines in old english style.-
Any way I'm surprise that the Coens Brothers film in Scottland, that's new, because their shooting are always in US.-

Apple TV+ is really hurting for legitimacy so this is a big acquisition for them. Between this and Coda they might finally get some major "welcome to the club" noms.

It's more because of of the Denzel/Netflix relationship that I was surprised Apple got this one. Netflix producing and releasing his August Wilson film adaptions, the project they got set up with him and Julia Roberts, them acquiring Malcolm and Marie with his son. That's why I was a little curious to see if Netflix tried to get this one as well. But great pickup for Apple+ and yes they do have similar financial resources to distribute this film and fund its Awards campaign next year.

Meanwhile, Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” starring Frances McDormand and Denzel Washington, has been screened for Cannes boss Thierry Fremaux. Whether it actually makes it to Cannes is a whole other story since Apple TV, who recently bought the rights to the film, may want to wait it out for the fall festivals. www.worldofreel.com/blog/2021/5/tj2xbayf3pz31z1mvyb3jfv7d05dcp

Switched back to July ....... Do they still have that Streamer rule? Afaik they have not yet changed the rule - I saw this the other day about Jane Campion's new movie - The Power of the Dog: www.indiewire.com/2021/05/cannes-film-festival-predictions-2021-1234636162/
While her latest film, an adaptation of the Thomas Savage novel of the same name, sounds like an obvious fit for the festival based on pedigree alone, there’s one tiny problem: it’s a Netflix film.
Here’s hoping Cannes and the streaming giant iron out their differences or at least bend a few rules — Cannes now requires set theatrical plans from its competition slate, and Netflix has avoided festivals in recent months — so that Campion might continue her streak at the festival.

Streaming films can just play out of competition.

Streaming films can just play out of competition. The thing is, the Coens are Cannes favorites, probably more than any other working filmmakers. I can definitely see Fremaux bending over backwards to let them into competition by throwing out some waffling B.S.

If Tragedy of MacBeth goes to Cannes in Competition, with a Spike Lee led jury..Denzel Washington will be an early favorite to win Cannes Best Actor. He already has 2 Silver Bears from the Berlin Film Festival.

He already has 2 Silver Bears from the Berlin Film Festival. Yeah, it would all depend on whether Spike cares about being seen as playing favorites. But as we saw when Guillermo headed the jury at Venice a couple years ago when Roma won, sometimes that doesn't matter.

The fact that the film is "R" is good........the fact that isn't for "extreme violence, gore and dismemberment" is disappointing .......imagine what Polanski's Macbeth would have looked like before he scaled it back! Also, I know people like Will - I like Will too and this is the 2nd time I'm picking on him but - does he pretend to not read this board or lurk here (?) - or ANY board and acting like this profound insight just dawned on him? Everybody and their mother thinks this is going to Cannes Makes me think a Cannes premiere is totally possible - wtf is that - some kind of penetrating insight - let me see if I have this straight : the "rating" makes it more likely than the fact that it was screened for Thierry Fremaux before that rating?Yeah, right, ok........ Not really sure how this "makes me think" sh it works but basically everyone on Twitter is saying the same sh it and then when it happens saying "I called it"! Good on him for breaking the rating (I guess?) that is "news" but .......come on that "feeling" stuff ....

This awards preview article from The Playlist says that a few things might be award players from what they’ve heard, so grain of salt and all. Sometimes it can translate to a winner like when Laura Dern got a lot of hype for Marriage Story, or it can just be one of the many examples that doesn’t work out. FWIW, Erik Anderson also heard that it’s going to be a big player too though.

Selznick?
