MAR's Top 50 Best Crime Films Awwwww yeah... we got the poll fever, baby. Send me a ranked list of your top 25 crime films (min. 10) by private message by Sunday, December 15th.The eligibility is as simple as: if IMDb lists "crime" as a genre for a film, it is eligible. If there is something you think should be eligible that isn't marked as "crime" on IMDb, feel free to bring it up in this thread. This encapsulates everything from noir to neo-noir, gangster to gangsta, cops to robbers and..... well, you get the point. Also feel free to use this thread for FYCs... I am leaving the voting open for two months, so if you have any crime films you want to catch up on beforehand you have plenty of time... and no fucking excuse. So pop on that fedora and get to work! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ballots Received:1. stephen*** 2. I wonder if the Mann fanaticism on here has a chance to beat out the Scorsese love.

FYC: I'll just list a bunch of Johnnie To films, who I consider, by far, the best crime film director of the 21st century.
PTU (2003) Throw Down (2004) Election (2005) Exiled (2006) Mad Detective (2007) Sparrow (2008) Drug War (2012)

Well letterboxd has the entire TDK trilogy as crime so I’ll FYC that along with both versions of Scarface, The Sting and The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover

This is one thing I don't have a standing list for that just requires a little editing, so I'll have to build this from the ground up....but as a list nerd
A few FYCs
The Usual Suspects (since I'm the only person who still seems to love the shit out of this film)
Seven Psychopaths & In Bruges & Clue (cause sometimes crime is a chucklefest)
Killer Joe (which features a plethora of crime)

Strangely Vertigo isn't listed as crime on IMDB though I feel aside from romance or mystery, it would have to be just that - a crime thriller. Thoughts?
Kind of goes for just about all Hitchcock thrillers as well.
EDIT: Chinatown, as well, is not listed. Seems IMDB lists most of the crime thrillers I think of under thriller rather than crime, so perhaps I/we may need specification as to what Crime falls under?

Kind of goes for just about all Hitchcock thrillers as well. I'd definitely count it... much more than a detective movie, but still a detective movie. Btw, probably gonna extend the deadline for this by a month since I'll be too busy to devote much attention to it for the next two weeks.

Yeah, I feel any story dealing with a detective, let alone a crime of some kind, is a crime film. That's why I found it so odd that a lot of my favorites were missing when I searched by genre on IMDB. Maybe I should try Letterboxd instead, but I suppose either way I'll make my own judgment. Just hope some films don't miss out! No worries on the deadline. I only have time about once or twice a week anymore to visit here, so wanted to get it all sorted out now

Is this just exclusive to narrative films or are documentaries eligible as well?

those of you with Criterion Channel subscriptions, please check out Masahiro Shinoda's Pale Flower before the deadline. One of the sexiest, sleekest gangster films I've seen.

I will definitely be voting, I'll work on a list soon. In the meantime, I'd like to FYC Les diaboliques (1955) The Raid 2 (2014) Miller's Crossing (1990) Wind River (2017) Hell or High Water (2016) American Psycho (2000) Death on the Nile (1978) Can You Ever Forgive Me? (2018) Chicago (2002) Wild at Heart (1990) Bad Times at the El Royale (2018) The Young Offenders (2016) Summer of Sam (1999) Killing Them Softly (2012) A Prophet (2009) The Night of the Hunter (1955) The Departed (2006)
I won't actually vote for all of the above, but they have a crime tag on IMDB and they fit it to varying degrees.

Btw, probably gonna extend the deadline for this by a month since I'll be too busy to devote much attention to it for the next two weeks. So it'll be pushed back after the AMARAs deadline then? I have some last few 2018 things to watch, as well as a lot that I want to catch up on for this, so I just want to plan that accordingly.
