I freaking hate Prisoners too I respect directing and the actors, especially Gyllenhaal there does something very special but the story is so damn stupid imho. For me it is the blinkin' blinking! I love Jake Gyllenhaal, but Prisoners is for me a perfect example of where he can have flaws as an actor. It isn't that he is anything other than good in the film (not great, but good - above average. I do think Hugh Jackman is TERRIBLE in the film and I think Paul Dano is brilliant in the bit he's in it for, but anyway) but Jake has clearly overthought this character and given him an irrelevant (to the audience) backstory which he thinks he conveys with the use of blinking. Even writing that, it sounds like a comedy sketch to me. I cannot be the only person (can I?) who after a while started the find the blinkin' blinking hilarious?! Every time Jake did it I would be (I had to struggle really hard to stifle my giggles so as not to laugh out loud!) and it would take me out of the story entirely. I love you Jake - Donnie Darko is one of the best and I would have given you an Oscar for your work in Nightcrawler where also, at last you were able to play a character where you did not need your audience to like you even one iota. But seriously Jake: Prisoners? What were you thinking with your blinking!!!?! I only saw the film once too, admittedly. It was one of the strangest cinema experiences I have ever had. I was at a packed screening and there was a group of teenaged girls in there who kept doing actual screaming (not screaming words or anything, just "AAAAHHHHH!!!!!" screaming) every time Jake came onscreen. It was so bizarre. I mean, it isn't exactly the kind of film for such!!! Weeeeiiirrrddd!!!! I didn't think much of the film. If I rate a film 8/10 or above I like it well to love it. 7/10 I likely like aspects, but overall feel it has too many deep flaws to even be called properly good. 6/10 and under I don't like it. But clearly at 6 it still has some elements that are good or I value.
