The greatest director of film musicals there ever was. Hats off to Big Stan.

RIP
Along with the recently passed Albert Finney, two of the key artists involved for the magic of Two For The Road a personal favorite and an unusually modern film that still holds up.

I'm shocked that he was still alive. Seems weird (and a bit unfair) that he wasn't being more celebrated in the last few decades if he was still among the living.

With his body of work, the guy should have been having retrospectives, AFI galas and whatever else on a yearly basis. He's a legend of the golden age of American movies, and should have been more feted while still with us. My opinion anyway. Because he wasn't feted, and his great body of work was so long ago, I simply assumed he was already dead.

Would have thought he was already dead but RIP.
Looked up his filmography and it's pretty solid. Funny Face and Charade with Audrey Hepburn and Arabesque with Sophie Loren and Gregory Peck.

He made some not so great films by the end of his career like a lot of directors, but God was he a terrific choreographer-turned-director. On the town,Singing in the Rain, charade is terrific Hitchcock send up, so much that you wouldn't be wrong for mistaking it for being by the master. RIP!!!

I didn't even know he was alive. In any case, may he rest in peace. Singin' in the Rain is one of the greatest films ever made.

RIP . Singin' in the Rain is probably one of my top 5 all-time favourite films and I'm also a big fan of his work on On the Town.

Oh no! Very sad, despite I didn't even know he was still alive. I know he was known especially for his musicals, but for me will mainly forever be the man who directed Charade, which sadly hasn't quite the standing it deserves as a classic. A film that is in my Top 100 of all time. Rarely has thrill and humor been mixed better than here. Arabesque is another very good film.
RIP

I like how everyone here isn't remotely aware that the guy was still even alive up to this point (myself included). Donen pretty much live a quiet life long after his retirement.
He's definitely a Golden Age director that will be missed, along with some of his ionic classics such as Singin' in the Rain. RIP
It has been a long time since I've last seen Singin' in the Rain. Rita Moreno now pretty much outlive her cast members and director.

My goodness. I've seen ten of his films and I never realized how great he is. I always thought of him as having a couple of classics and bunch of forgettable movies, but that just isn't true. On top of everything that's been mentioned already, he also did Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (one of the best choreographed musicals ever, if a little weak in the story), The Grass Is Greener (delightful Cary Grant comedy, filled to the brim with wit), Royal Wedding (Fred Astaire kills it!), Damn Yankees (one of the more fun musicals out there, but that has to do more with the excellent source material). The guy really did do magic.
