Holy hell, this looks really bad. It legitimately looks like a Lifetime movie.

I'm a fan of his 3 previous directorial efforts, so I'm finding the existence of this movie baffling. Like what appealed to Denzel about this seemingly mawkish material? He's never been in movies like this, so why suddenly pivot to directing one?

On paper, John Q was Dog Day's Afternoon meets the Healthcare Crisis, so I can totally see why Denzel would be attracted to it. It's hard hitting material. The director wasn't neccesarily up to the task of getting the most out of it.

I think this film/story appealed to Denzel because he admires the role of a military soldier and putting your life on the line and potentially giving the ultimate sacrifice for your country, which Charles King did do. It’s also a love story and from what I’ve read more of a romantic film. Apparently him and his producing partner Todd Black had this story from Canedy’s memoir for over 10 years so it was a pet project of his. Plus you had the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of Mudbound, Virgil Williams, writing the script so I can see why the elements of this drew him to the material to direct and obviously MBJ took the lead role so he could work with Denzel and have him as a mentor about the business. Trailers did give the movie off as a light holiday, romantic film..King’s death in the Iraq War not withstanding.

Yeah, I'm still kind of baffled why they took a seemingly lightweight romantic drama approach, when in theory, you could do a story like this in quite a "prestige" way that also encompasses romantic elements. Feels weird to me for Denzel to have this project on his books for over a decade and to kind of drop it as what feels like his most disposable directorial project to date. I'll watch it for myself to judge (maybe I'll think its great!), but the impressions I'm getting so far is that the project isn't living up to the potential it had on paper.

Seems like he was more attracted to the project because it was a personal "black story", and also cause he wanted to direct a movie where he didn't also have to be in it, he only cast himself in Antwone Fisher, and The Great Debaters, because otherwise those movies wouldn't have gotten financied. If it didn't work, oh well, he'll just move on to the next project, and hope that works better.

I agree with what you and therealcomicman said, I can see why he was drawn this but I don’t know how it ended up the way it is on screen. Something changed in development on this, I thought it would lean more into the war aspect with romantic elements. Well if he’s 3/4 after this it’s not bad at all. He says he wants to direct more now at this point in his career. See what his next directing project would be. I could definitely see him directing his son one day for sure.
