Vittorio Storaro yesterday, translated: "I should also shoot my fifth film with Woody Allen. The appointment for now is in Paris at the beginning of August"Hopefully the next one looks better. I was quite disappointed by how certain sections of Rifkin's Festival looked. The lighting seemed quite garish and odd, not in a good way. The Storaro-Allen partnership has been a bit underwhelming I guess. I'd like Woody to maybe go out there and try something very different, like some of his 80s work. But I shouldn't complain, given his enormous body of work.

As with Rainy Day in New York I'm probably going to watch this just to spite the people who tried to kill his career even though late career Allen is pretty

Jordan Ruimy: "A source close to Woody Allen’s team is telling me that the writer-director is close to shooting his next film in Paris. This one is said to be a darker drama in the same vein as Match Point. A French and English cast has supposedly been assembled. " www.woodyallenpages.com/2022/01/woody-allen-discusses-rifkins-festival-and-new-book-zero-gravity-on-maltin-on-movies-podcast/Woody did an hour on Leonard Maltin's podcast - he doesn't make the Paris movie sound as concrete as the Ruimy source. New book called Zero Gravity out in May, WA says - another comic collection like Without Feathers. And the new play, a comedy, intended to make the stage later this year.

They were almost worth watching just for him (though I did like both Rainy Day and Cafe Society).

Woody Allen - or as pacinoyes calls him "the better version of Spike Lee" (um) "retires" - Serena, Federer and now this, doesn't anyone want to work ffs - obviously an American genius when he was on his game - and not just as a director / writer but as a stand-up comic - this is taken from Jeff Wells site today:
Woody Allen has stated that his currently-lensing, Paris-based film will be his last. His 50th film, in short, is the “finitoand adios muchachos.” He told La Guardia, a Sanish publication, that we will not make any more films “in principle”, but that he plans to write his first novel.
Quote: “My idea, in principle, is not to make more movies and focus on writing these stories and, well, now I’m thinking more of a novel.” He added that he does not plan to publish more memoirs.
Smart-asses and Woody haters will say that his retirement decision was made for him years ago, and that the U.S. film industry retired or “cancelled” Allen over the Dylan thing back in the late teens, but that’s bullshit, of course. If he wanted to Allen could continue to make features for as long as he’s physically able.
I think having made 50 films, at least 40% or 50% of which range from excellent to very good to diverting to mildly approvable to not half bad…that’s an extremely honorable track record, all things considered.
Some would argue that the percentage of thumbs-up approvable Allen films is closer to 70% or 80%, but I’m using tough standards here.

Also confirmed in the cast by Variety:
Lou de Laage Melvil Poupaud Elsa Zylberstein
I like what I've seen from these three. Zylberstein was a riot in Big Bug this year. Still dreaming there's a role for Huppert or Fanny Ardant or Camille Cottin or Depardieu or Omar Sy, etc etc.

The trailer looks like it could be a minor diversion or a top-notch suspense film. I'm leaning towards this being minor Allen, but I *like* minor Allen, so count me in. The framing is certainly interesting - Allen hasn't looked this invested in a film's look since Wonder Wheel, at the least.

I really wanna watch this His last two were such weirdly lifeless affairs, hope this one's decent. Especially if it is indeed his final one - even with a range of recent duds and the fact he never quite seemed to hit his vintage 80s form, his filmography to me is still one of the greatest and most interesting in all of cinema.

Glenn Kenny is an idiot. The script is weak and the ending is preposterously dumb/lazy. Match Point is infinitely better.

From a new interview in Spanish, but: "He is currently trying to get a new film underway to start shooting in 4 or 5 months in Italy."
Bellissimo, andiamo! Gimme a cast of Luca Marinelli and Barbara Ronchi, thx! Or reteam with Benigni and bring him outta retirement.
