A small gem that totally got lost in the awards season shuffle (though I'm belatedly ecstatic that it nabbed a Best Original Screenplay nod). I haven't seen "Beginners", but Mill's sensibility as a writer and director clicked with me immediately here. I loved how the film managed to balance the respective vignettes of each character with the larger telling of America's cultural and societal growing pains during the late 70s and onward. The aforementioned writing and directing are the film's core strengths, but the stirring score and Sean Porter's crystalline cinematography really add to the film's vivid evocation of time and place. The performances are also superb, I would've gladly seen all three women nominated in their corresponding categories, and Zumann is also something of a revelation as the story's wide-eyed view of how America's cultural/sexual/political revolutions percolated into communities like his own.
Anyways, noms/wins? How would you rank the main female trio?

Annette Bening is extraordinary, the best she's ever been - in any other year she'd be my win. Gerwig is fantastic too. Easily my favorite American "indie" of 2016 (I don't count The Witch since it feels like something else entirely).

It's one of those films that gets better the more I think about it. Can't wait to rewatch it.

This is one my favorite movies of the past year, why did it fly under everyone's radar? The ensemble and writing is top notch, Mills really knows how to balance the light humor and deep feelings. You shoud definetly look up Beginners, it's even better.

Yep yep yep. And I'd highly recommend Beginners, which is extremely similar in nature to 20th Century Women, and is just as good if not better.
As for noms and wins, I guess that'd look something like: Best Picture (#7) Best Actress -- Annette Bening (#2, to Emma Stone) Best Original Screenplay (#2, to Paterson)
I'd also probably throw in something for Editing, and Soundtrack if I'd consider that a category. Oh, and Ensemble for sure.
As for ranking the main female trio, I'd say: Bening > Gerwig > Fanning. The entire main five are all incredible.

I thought it was lackluster. I adore Beginners but this one felt forced, academic and hollow. I kinda understand why some love it because the film has this certain "fill in the blanks with your personal stories" melancholy evocation but that was not enough for me. It was more like an eh ok essay than a full fledged film. What really amazes me is that there are people who claim this is Annette Bening's career best. Uhm, no. Not even close. This is a role Annette Bening could play in her sleep. She is perfectly fine as always but hell no is this her best performance.

But I might give it a shot now.

I haven't seen all of the Bening's performance, but this is certainly one of her better ones at least. I don't think she phoned it in, if anything it's a noticeably more relaxed and interior performance compared to her others. She exuded just the right amount of maternal warmth without being maudlin, but also thoughtfully delineated Dorothea's own internal struggle to define herself as a woman when there was no real push to do so for most of her life.

Nah, it's a boring turd. This board loves hyping up those small flukey independent dramas: From Moonlight, to Carol, to The Florida Project, to Lady Bird, to this. I don't think any of those will be classics. But 20th Century Women might be the worst of all of those, with the exception of Lady Bird.
