Strange, I just re-watched Children of Men last night and it made me sad to think he was such a powerhouse in the 2000s, but now he's sort of fizzled out (save The Knick). Maybe he just wants a bit of time to pick and choose his projects carefully, but he's a presence I've always enjoyed.

Probability's quite low right now, unfortunately. I think he'd be great in something directed by Inarritu, Haigh or Mike Leigh. And if he could nail the accent, he'd be an amazing Joel in a Last of Us movie IMO. Oh, and I'd kill for Clive and Julianne Moore to play a couple again (though not in the same vein as Children of Men).

I still don't understand his career. You'd think The Knick (where he's superb) would at least get him a second wave of success like a mini-McConnaissance, but nothing...

Unless it's in good supporting roles in dramas I think that ship has sailed. He's not going to be an A-lister or Bond as so many people talked about.
It really seemed like the carpet was being rolled out for him in that late 2000's period with big lead roles in mainstream movies that were actually good (Children of Men, The International) but none of the movies worked out commercially so he did not become a leading man and kind of drifted off.
Those BMW commercials he did way back when were amazing though, particularly the Wong Kar-wai one.

I'm not a huge fan of his overall or of Inside Man (7/10) but he was starry there and immediately thereafter sunk like a rock in film .....I think he can come back and The Knick was straight up great.......but man his films post-Inside Man for a guy in his early 40s then were pretty ghastly.

Yeah his career is a little...puzzling to me but I've read several times how much of a wife & kids type of guy he is and he is also VERY London. I don't know how much this played in his career tho. Sometimes we can forget that they are also human being like the rest of us, actors like Jodie Foster and (maybe) Clive too are here to reminds us of it, there is a life outside of acting. He and Lothaire Bluteau (another talented actor who probably deserved a better Hollywood career) work really well together in Bent.

His run during the 2000’s was pretty great. Looks like he has some TV roles lined up so he’ll probably stick to that and supporting (villain?) roles in more mainstream movies. His days of being a leading man may be behind him but I’d love to see him land a juicy supporting role with a great director.
