Watching Unbreakable and Glass virtually back to back reminded me of how much Jackson is able to elevate the roles he takes on. I’m always excited to see his name attached to a film.
Hoping someone with more obscure taste can pitch in with some underrated performances. There’s a lot I haven’t seen, so I’m hoping for recommendations as much as anything. But here are my favourite:
1. Jackie Brown 2. Unbreakable/Glass 3. The Hateful Eight 4. Pulp Fiction 5. Jungle Fever 6. Django Unchained 7. I Am Not Your Negro (not sure if it can really be counted, but his narration here is powerfully nuanced)

Yeah, it's really the Tarantino's and then Unbreakable at the top for me but want to give a shoutout to his work in The Negotiator.

As far as I've seen, Pulp Fiction is the only time that he's truly been great. Legendary performance. After that, I suppose he's good in Jackie Brown, The Hateful Eight, and Unbreakable -- but that's about it.

In the minority I guess but always thought Hard Eight was the best thing he ever did honestly. I love what that movie gets out of him and Paltrow - as sort of counterpoints to Hall and Reilly.

Pulp Fiction and Jungle Fever are easily his top two for me... though I like him in pretty much everything besides Kingsman.
Special shout out to his amazing work as "Black Guy" in Sea of Love.

I'm not seeing several of what I consider his best roles mentioned yet, so I'll just throw them out there (special mention to The Caveman's Valentine, probably his strongest performance outside the Tarantinoverse - as a schizophrenic, homeless musical savant/amateur detective pursuing cosmic conspiracy theories):
One Eight Seven (Kevin Reynolds - 1997) The Caveman's Valentine (Kasi Lemmons - 2001) Changing Lanes (Roger Michell - 2002) Black Snake Moan (Craig Brewer - 2006) Mother and Child (Rodrigo Garcia - 2009) The Sunset Limited (Tommy Lee Jones - 2011)

A very simple and profound piece, that is beautifully performed. I also love the Cormac McCarthy original written piece. Great mention.....

I feel a lot of people have mentioned everything at his best, but I would like to mention something else. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Yeah, I know it's not a movie, but his performance was so good, it shouldn't be unmentioned.

I would love to see Sam do theatre-- what would be a great role for him?

What an incredibly limited actor. He makes Leo DiCaprio look like Daniel Day-Lewis in terms of versatility.

A few not mentioned yet that I thought he was great in:
Resurrecting the Champ Coach Carter The Red Violin Lakeview Terrace
He is a little one-note as an actor, but every once in a while he can show flashes of brilliance.

That's the thing with the Old Sam, at the end people will mention 8-12 different movies where they though he was great in/they truly liked him in. He has done a lot of cr*p but the great work is there too, his body of performances is more impressive than the ones of some so called great and more awarded/respected actors. He's an icon, one of the most recognized name and face in the movie's world but he has always been a somehow underrated actor, especially in "serious" film forum places.
I will add The Long Kiss Goodnight to the list, he's a riot in it. And in term of being in the right film, look at that glorious 90's he had. In how many masterpieces/great/underappreciated-great/genre classics...movies he was a part of, that's amazing.

Yeah, I used to be more critical of Jackson for the amount of coasting, "taking a movie to play golf" stuff he did (and it's still a negative with him), but when you look at the body of work he built, the man probably deserves much more credit than he gets. As I said in another thread, he's probably up there with Jack Nicholson in terms of talent and willingness to grind a singular iconic persona and charisma into the ground, all day, every day. Nicholson gets the respect because of the 70's and it's surrounding mythology, the fact that he did far less crap, and of course the Oscar tally. But they are very similar animals. Posterity will probably be far more generous to Jackson's standing as actor than it probably has been during his career or lifetime.

Your Top 5 Sam Jackson performances?
1) Jackie Brown 2) Pulp Fiction 3) Jungle Fever 4) The Hateful Eight 5) Django Unchained
Rewatched Jackie Brown again and forgot how great he was in that. He's best in show for me in Django and The Hateful Eight too.

ONE EIGHT SEVEN /EVE'S BAYOU/DJANGO UNCHAINED / UNBREAKABLE / THE NEGOTIATOR
wallsofjericho Both Pam and Sam were snubbed big time for Jackie Brown . I also think it's QT's best film to date.
