I'm having the hardest time choosing between Ian Holm in The Sweet Hereafter and Christopher Guest in Waiting for Guffman. I might have to give another tie in my personal wins.

1. Duvall - The Apostle 2. Pearce - L.A. Confidential 3. SLJ - Jackie Brown 4. DDL - The Boxer (one of Sheridan's best and most underrated) 5. Holm - The Sweet Hereafter
Hoffman (Wag the Dog), Malloy (In the Company of Men), and Woody Allen (Deconstructing Harry) round out my top 8. Pretty alright year for this category.

Ray Winstone in Nil By Mouth gets my win, but 1997 was a glorious year in acting, and so many other gents are worthy of it too.

Pacino in Donnie Brasco and Duvall in the Apostle.
Hoffman in Wag the Dog was more of a supporting role.

It's between Russell Crowe in L.A. Confidential and Jack Nicholson in As Good as it Gets for me. Lately I tend to give Crowe the edge.

1. Jack Nicholson, As Good As It Gets2. Roberto Benigni, Life is Beautiful 3. Kevin Kline, The Ice Storm 4. Mark Wahlberg, Boogie Nights 5. Matt Damon, Good Will Hunting Glad to see another person picking Jack for this one. Well deserved Oscar. He has way too many big scenes not to be #1. As Good As It Gets is still my favorite film of all-time.
