First Reformed. Not even a question for me.

Predestination's my favorite. Perfect marriage of actor, co-star and material.
I don't like First Reformed, but he does so much to elevate it and damn near pulls it off. It's an impressive performance shackled by an inherently poor conceit, and I just wish he'd grafted that performance/character onto something more worthwhile. (Cue Mattsby and Pacinoyes collapsing on their fainting couches.)

I don't think he's ever been close to great until First Reformed. He's been good a few times, but this was something else to me.
In this film all his weaknesses were pluses. His cloying, annoying manner (and that's him, it just is) fits the madness in a way of the character - it's a strident, overbearing quality. His boyishness is now turned sour and inward - on the verge of 50 in First Reformed a seeming child as a man now, a seeming child before God too.
Very rarely do actors shut me up - he did this year. Role and execution of the role of his life.......

First Reformed The Good Lord Bird Tape Before trilogy Boyhood / Sinister Waiting for Godot Raymond & Ray Training Day / Before the Devil Knows You're Dead A Midnight Clear The Phenom Mag7/Maudie
Bump bc he's been interesting/working hard so far this decade..... between directing a 6-7 hour doc epic on Paul Newman, he's released around ten movies, a few mini-series including Good Lord Bird which is positively a vying best perf after First Reformed... and released a book and performed several zoom plays including a recorded Godot where he showed great zest. As for '22, he ain't winning Performer of the Year from MAR but he was really good in The Northman, had villainous range btwn Black Phone and Moon Knight, and I found his Ray&Ray perf to be rather moving. He may be in a Best Pic nominee as well in Glass Onion (a wtf wasted role lol). Also has a LGBT Western from Pedro Almodóvar coming up!

Training Day. He held his own against an acting giant like Denzel, who gave a masterful performance. That’s mighty impressive to me
