McDormand last year. She was already seen as the general favorite to win by the time the Globes took place, but that speech only strengthened her case.

I think we can count Bale's 2011 Golden Globe speech here... He was certainly far ahead if the competition then but Geoffrey Rush was still supposed to be giving him a run for his money. He was also a notoriously private figure - a mystery - back then and his few newsmaking incidences till then had been Very negative. His light hearted funny speech and genial attitude may have made him seem more likeable to the industry's eyes.

Mahershala Ali’s SAG speech was really beautiful and humble, connecting it to the themes of the film and his personal life without it feeling like publicity grandstanding.
