Yeah. They're going the safe & boring route this year.

Yeah. They're going the safe & boring route this year. I still think he'll take that 5th spot . A GG + SAG + bafta snub doesn't necessarily mean that it's ALL over .

I've no idea why but I still have this hunch that AMPAS will nominate it for Actor and Script. I hope it does anyway...

Best Picture is probably not happening, but there's still hope for Hawke and the screenplay. Let's be optimistic.

No, you simply can't deny the power and pull of winning all three of the major critics' prizes.

No, you simply can't deny the power and pull of winning all three of the major critics' prizes. Tell that to Sally Hawkins and Bill Murray. Can’t is too strong of a word. They can do whatever they want. I’m still tentatively predicting him though.

By the way, anyone know why Paul is hated? I heard he slapped Natalie Portman with a raw pork chop once. That could be some reason why... just kidding he's probably just an asshole.

BAFTA killed Schrader but not Hawke. I feel like the Oscars are a bit closer to critics than other industry awards usually are. That's why they nominated people like Rampling and Huppert in the past

I don't think Hawke can overcome the advantages Washington has (his film, the campaign, and yes, his father). When was the last critical darling AMPAS nominated when that person had been snubbed by BAFTA, the Globes and SAG? And for a film likely to get no other nominations?

Charlotte Rampling 3 years ago and Marion Cotillard the year before that. I don't want to rule out Hawke, but Rampling had never been nominated before and Cotillard had hit everywhere just a few years before with Rust and Bone and then missed the Oscar nomination. While the Best Actor race is weak this year in that, it narrowed down to about 7 candidates early on, I think 2014 and 2015 were really weak for Best Actress especially 2014. I don't know if Cotillard would have been able to get in during a more competitive year; although, to be fair to her I remember her getting a lot of praise from other actors for her performance, but her only competition for the last spot was Amy Adams in a film that got okay reviews, and Jennifer Aniston in a film that got poor reviews. In 2015, Maggie Smith and Lily Tomlin never got enough traction, so Jennifer Lawrence was still able to make it in despite mixed to poor reviews for Joy. Looking at who made what precursors, I forgot that was the year that at SAG Helen Mirren got double nominations, and Sarah Silverman shocked everyone by getting a Best Actress nomination. On paper, Hawke does feel like a passion choice like Cotillard and Rampling, but unfortunately the other potential nominees are all in films likely to be nominated for Best Picture. He's also been nominated before and wasn't snubbed a few years before like Cotillard, so Washington has the newbie factor working for him as well as being Hollywood royalty.

Charlotte Rampling 3 years ago and Marion Cotillard the year before that. OK, so it has happened now and then. But Rampling campaigned her ass off, and Cotillard had the advantage of a weak year (the only person she ousted was Jennifer Aniston, who was never heavily favoured to be nominated for her film, anyway).

I think Hawke has a little chance because the VERY strong critic support... and the Academy kinda likes him. Tho the film might be too bleak for them to be recognized at all.

I hate the film with a passion so fiery, that it was stoked in the bowels of hell itself.
