Cotillard is luminous in probaly her best English-speaking performance, but she's let down by the film around he. Despite some rich and evocative imagery courtesy of cinematographer Darius Khondji, the story never really finds its footing and it certainly doesn't help that Phoenix and Renner seem to be acting in two different movies.

Made me think of a much, much better film (The Godfather : Part ||) with it's setting.

Marion was sensational in it. Probably her overall strongest performance and that's really something since she's had plenty.

It's a good film that feels like something I would have loved if it weren't for Phoenix, who is uncharacteristically off here and miscast.

One of the best films of the 2010s. Up there with Two Lovers and The Lost City of Z, these three are some wonderful films from James Gray.

One of Chaplin's best. Iconic for a reason. 101 years old and still timely as ever.

Horrible.
It's perhaps the one time I shudder thinking of Juaq's performance.

It's worth watching for technical aspects and Cotillard's incredible performance.
Gray's direction certainly elevates it, although a bit academic to my taste, but the story is so dull and done waaay better dozens of time before, and neither Phoenix or Renner had the ability to sell the period. But if you're talking about Chaplin, yeah, I agree with the guy above.

I liked it, especially Cotillard's performance and Khondji's stellar cinematography, but to be frank I hardly remember much about it.
The Lost City of Z impressed me more, even with its decidedly lesser lead performance.

One of the best American films of the century. I haven't seen Z yet but I think it will blow it out of the water and same goes for Ad Astra if Gray doesn't make it for the 'The Favorite' audience

Good movie, but Phoenix's performance felt a little off. Not sure what it was about it, but it felt like he was almost overacting. He's usually perfect in these very meaty, emotional roles, so I don't know.

Oh honey, Cotillard was phenomenal. I'll never understand why this movie was buried apart from maybe something to do with Weinstein's involvement... or dick.
We need more Marion in our lives! She was also exceptional in Rust & Bone.

Solidly told, greatly acted and well judged. Not everyone will enjoy the pace, but the film is most rewarding to people who pay close attention to its details.

It's a 2013 film, not 2014.

It's a 2013 film, not 2014. It released in the United States in mid-2014. Not sure why you felt it necessary to point that out though, he's asking for thoughts on the film, not whether or not the release date he used is faultlessly accurate.

Absolutely adored it. Cotillard is a revelation in it, Phoenix is damn great, and most of all it showcases James Gray at the true top of his game. Phenomenally beautiful movie with glorious mise-en-scène and atmosphere, and some utterly breathtaking cinematography -- the final shot is just to die for. Would probably make my top 25 or so of the decade.

7.5-8/10. Excellent cinematography and production design, a moving performance from Cotillard and two solid supporting turns from Phoenix and especially Renner. I agree with the poster above that the pacing was a little slow but I didn't mind it too much and the final scene was simply stunning, both in terms of acting and directing.
