Which one do you prefer? Overall better film?
Unpopular opinion but I'd pick Death Proof. I'd also say it's one of my favorite ever Tarantino films.

Planet Terror. An entertaining film.
Death Proof was Tarantino's way of getting his fetishes on camera.

I thought Death Proof captured the whole grindhouse thing much better than Planet Terror. Rodriguez's movie is kind of entertaining in its own right, but he turned the grindhouse aspect into a full-on gimmick using the film scratches and missing reels strategically. And his film looks nothing like those grindhouse movies. Tons of CGI, tons of in-jokes, massive scale battles and so on. I mean, I'm not saying that this format can't be used in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way, but I think he just made a Robert Rodriguez movie and then put some gimmicks in it.
While Tarantino actually made a film that I could see being shown in those actual grindhouse theatres. I thought he showed a much better understanding of this type of cinema while also elevating it with the sheer quality of the car chases. I love how he doesn't fill the screen with tons of shit going on, but sort of makes it feel down-and-dirty. While, of course, indulging in his type of dialogue a fair amount, as to not make it a full-on stylization without his personal stamp.
Neither are great films (the project as a whole is really fascinating though, the full experience of it), but I found Tarantino's much better.

I haven't seen the Grindhouse versions, but based on the feature length ones I'd have the first act of Death Proof first, then Mary Elizabeth Winstead in that outfit, then Planet Terror, then everything non-Mary Elizabeth Winstead related about the second act of Death Proof.
Overall I think I like Planet Terror more, because that day time stuff in Tarantino's movie really sucked. Stick to stunts, Zoe Bell.

easily Planet Terror. I remember seeing this in theaters and the entire audience was loving every second of Planet Terror (clapping & laughing through out it). Not so much with Death Proof. Just too much talking in the film , took too long to get going and I found Tarantino's dialogue to be insufferable at times. I found Planet Terror to be a LOT more fun.

Death Proof for sure. I mean, both are pretty great films on their own...but Death Proof has an edge. But I do think they compliment each other extremely well and make Grindhouse an excellent film. One of the best theater experiences I will probably ever have.

I haven't seen them since they came out, but I explicitly recall liking Death Proof better.

Planet Terror, Deathproof always felt a bit indulgent even by Tarantino standards to me. It's not a bad film though.

Planet Terror.
Death Proof is everything wrong with Tarantino tenfold.

Both together with the trailers is the only way to watch that movie. I don't think either really stands on its own, but as a double feature gimmick it's fine.
To actually answer your question, probably Planet Terror. As much as I love the first half of Death Proof, that second half is brutal.

Planet Terror is a genuinely enjoyable and entertaining film.
Death Proof, especially the first half, is a risible piece of crap. Kurt Russell can't even save it....Kurt Russell.

Love them both, but Death Proof is more rewatchable. This and Kill Bill marked Quentin Tarantino's last bit of greatness. It just went downhill afterwards.

Planet Terror was leagues better. Death Proof was OK but it's not even close for me.

Planet Terror, easily. Planet Terror is glorious, ridiculous, Rodriguez fun. Death Proof is QT's worst work, although the stunt work and last 20 minutes are kick ass.

Death Proof and quite comfortably, for me. Also, that moment when you realize that Stuntman Mike inspired Drive.

Both Planet Terror and Death Proof are both enjoyable, but in entirely different ways.
I'd say if you want something that you're not going to take completely seriously, put on Planet Terror and you're set. You'll also be treated to some pretty good, but over the top performances from Rose McGowan and Freddy Rodriguez. And Marley Shelton, Jeff Fahey and Michael Biehn are pretty good in this film too.
But if you're looking for a more plot-driven story line with the exploitation film references and feel, along with a killer soundtrack and Kurt Russell probably giving the best performance in his career, then I'd suggest watching Death Proof. While I do find Death Proof to be a pretty good movie, it's definitely Quentin Tarantino's weakest film by far.
