Speaking of Dylan being one of the greatest lyricists...this is, IMO, his best written song. A masterwork.

it was in the city of spies / that I spoke with nothing but liespacinoyes fav of Robyn Hitchcock's 80s stuff? I'm still sorting out my 80s album list for the poll and just when I thought I was done, now I'm digging Black Snake Diamond Role-- lotta songs I really like Man Who Invented Himself, Meat, Love, etc-- wondering if I should give the other albums a listen.

Mattsby - like a lot of guys in the 80s he did his best stuff in '84 to many - making that, in a ridiculous way an embarrassment of riches year very rare in Rock history - like '77 in a way! That '84 album, I Often Dream Of Trains is a lot of peoples most beloved albums - some people really cherish that one - and I still go back to it all the time but really from Black Snake Diamond Role until the end of the decade he was of interest and on a bit of a roll. I go back the most though to his live album "Gotta Let This Hen Out" (great title)....which is sort of a greatest hits live up until that point ...........fascinating guy, lots of good stuff in the 80s.....and of course he's quite the writer.

Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs - known for his at the time unique appearance and major singles Wooly Bully ’65 and Little Red Riding Hood ’66, but as far as I’ve heard his best was this song released the next year as the B side to the crappy Old MacDonald Had a Boogaloo Farm, it didn’t chart anywhere, and I Never Had No One didn’t even make his ’67 album Ten of Pentacles…..

I know I recently did a Beatles video, but this is good enough for a plug.
To me one of the signs of a great song is when you can do it in a bunch of different arrangements and the quality still shines through. Strawberry Fields is one of those songs. The original acoustic demo with just John on guitar is really good and would be a lot of group's best song and I don't even like man and guitar songs that much. Then there was the version with the just the core rock band on guitar, bass, and drums, which is also really good and was intended to be the final version. Then John wanted it to be a dreamy baroque pop thing with strings, which lead to this one. This is one of the greatest recordings of all time in its own right and nearly as good as the completed song, where the rock band and orchestral versions of the song were edited together, with the different tempos and keys creating the surreal, dreamlike feel of the song. If I had recorded something this good I would have probably patted myself on the back and been satisfied with it. But The Beatles (and particularly John) always had to make everything perfect and just a little better. When you're expiramenting sometimes you're going to find something truly great and special by accident as they did with the finals song.
