A pitch-black comedy that at once feels like a nod to Antonioni, De Palma, giallo, Hitchcock, Sirk, John Waters... Lots of nodding. It's hilarious, sexy-sleazy, and anchored by two excellent performances from the perfectly cast Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Have you seen this? If so, what did you think?

Loved it. It's crazy entertaining, Lively and Kendrick are both great. I hoped for Blake to get at least a GG nom.

It was a nice surprise, sure. I think the opening act is amazing, and Kendrick and Lively are one of the best double teams I've seen in a movie in years. Once Lively goes the movie cannot really recover, though it stays pretty compelling as a mystery right up till the big twist when it proceeds to descend into greater stupidity with each passing scene.

Kendrick and Lively are one of the best double teams I've seen in a movie in years. I think it's career-best work from both of them - Kendrick's role is perfectly-pitched to her quirks as an actor, and Lively's cruelty, deadpan humor, and Monica Vitti-esque sexiness are more than I ever thought she was capable of - the film belongs to her.

I think in the hands of a capable director it could've been good, but Paul Feig was way out of his element here.
Blake Lively was definitely great though.

I wouldn't disagree. Possibly on Kendrick's part, undoubtedly on Lively's. Blake I think has taken hardcore lessons in how to be an obnoxious asshole from her husband. Like you say, never thought she had it in her. Going to be robbed of an Oscar nom.

It indeed was the biggest surprise of the year for me. It looked ridiculous on the trailers, and I just couldn't get excited over a Blake Lively/Anna Kendrick flick. Boy, I was wrong.
Paul Feig took a level in badass and proved to the whole audience that he truly understands why these kind of pulpy thrillers are so engaging - and why so many movies (Girl On The Train, anyone?) fail so miserably to replicate what once worked so well with Gone Girl and Big Little Lies.
When the movie throws on your face 18 different plot twists in the span of 5 minutes, it's a big eye-wink to the audience. "We're all in on the same joke, and it's a very good one", Kendrick and Lively (both in their finest hours) seem to say with a snark of the gods.

Wow, I would have never thought in a million years this gets so much love on this board. The trailer looked ugly and cheap. And now all your reactions really make me curious. Will give it a try in the next few weeks. Thanks

Pleasant little surprise. It was like a much more tolerable and fun Gone Girl for me. Lively was especially enjoyable to watch.

A surprise in the way that I was surprised at how little I liked it. I read the book and from that and the trailers I expected to love the movie. I tend to enjoy campy B-movies a lot and from reading the book Blake Lively seemed like such a great fit for her role. She was good in the movie but the screenplay was just sooo lacking. The movie never really figured out wether it wanted to be camp, a thriller or a comedy. In the end its a little bit of everything and thus too all over the place. I also didn't love the changes they made to the book, especially regarding Anna Kendrick's character. It almost seems like Feig didn't trust Kendrick with the actual character and ended up changing her to fit Kendrick's acting style.
So yeah, major disappointment.

BUMP
just watched it for the 1st time and it was definitely a pleasant surprise . Feig bounces back big time here after the dreadful Ghostbusters reboot . A Simple Favor could have been some shit Lifetime movie but Feig handles it well and it is darkly funny thru out and had me guessing all the way thru.
7.5 or 8/10 (imo not quite in the same ballpark as Gone Girl but its still really entertaining . Blake and Anna were both superb in their roles here)

I saw this about a month ago and still have no idea how to actually put my thoughts into words. It was certainly... a lot. It throws every c-grade shlock at the wall to see what sticks, keeps clumsily zigzagging between a bunch of different genres, never deciding what kind of movie it wants to be until it just gives up by the end and goes full on gonzo by the end and gives us the middle finger for ever caring. Anna
Anna Kendrick was decent in a role that was tailor-made for her and somehow should have been better. Blake Lively was ok but everyone let's her get away scot-free, she has had an entire career handed to her and gets praised whenever she's not awful? Okay then. She was decent but it's nothing most actresses couldn't easily top.
Henry Golding is the worst discovery of the year, completely stinking up the place here and in Crazy Rich Asians. Utterly horrible and I hope to never see or hear him again. It also has the worst child acting I've ever witnessed.
In the end it was mildly amusing but too mediocre and unambitious to ever be as fun and memorable it wanted to be.

This was absolutely delightful and easily Feig's most entertaining film. Doubles down on the pulpiness of the premise while finding the campy fun in it all. I will say that the conclusion wasn't as satisfying as the journey, but I laughed my ass off throughout. 8/10And Lively is definitely making my supporting actress lineup.

I added this movie to my watchlist because of a coupla AMARA nominations, and it didn't look THAT bad. I think it's my favorite of 2018 so far. My sister and I laughed our asses off through the whole thing. I knew nothing going in, and an OTT parody of schlocky, trashy erotic thrillers was not what I was expecting. Kendrick was solid gold (never been a fan of hers, but this plays to her strengths oh so well), Lively was okay, Golding was what he needed to be (which is forgettable and bland so we can focus on the ladies). Damn, it was such a fun time. The kind of movie you watch with a martini in hand and a smile on your face.

This film is highkey better than 5 of last year's eight Best Picture nominees, and not by a small margin.

Just finished this. Pleasant surprise. I did however guess the twist. I don't think anyone involved cared about keeping the twist secret. It's very obvious. They were more interested in parodying the whole erotic thriller genre, and they aced that side of things.
