how many fans we got? i'm gonna watch Lullaby to the Sorrowful Mystery soon so i can finally start working through his post-From What is Before stuff, but i think he is just great. Melancholia and Batang West Side are my two favorites, vastly different films. some of the other stuff i've seen of his has been more hit or miss, but i think behind every film he does there's possibility at a masterpiece. any fans of him on MAR?

I've seen Norte, The End Of History, Melancholia and The Woman Who Left. I liked the first and third ones. Lav Diaz is a talented director, but sometimes I think he has this uncompromising style just to make a point, so I don't really find him that interesting. I have the same problem with Bela Tarr.

his movies seem hard to cop, tried in the past, had no luck, gave up
I'd like to include myself as a fan though because he sounds very up my alley

Only seen Melancholia. Thought it was very good stuff (especially the last part of the movie, which apparently is generally less liked?) but that had nothing to do with the absurdly slow pacing, which I honestly don't get the appeal of by itself. I mean, it was fine here - there were only a couple of scenes I felt really dragged - but I prefer that type of pacing in a less lengthy film. I thought it worked really well in Jauja, for example, actually enhancing my experience with the film, whereas with this it was just kind of there. Basically, I'm not sure what Diaz (or Tarr, etc.) thought this would've lost if it was like two hours shorter beyond...meditative quality (?) or, in this particular case, highlighting the nature of depression...but hey, it's cool people can really get into that.
