Joins Wonder Woman as one of better entries from DCEU but it’s overtly familiar story doesn’t inspire much wonder beyond the obvious. It's makes a checklist of basic superhero things and marks every one of them but James Wan gave it much energy and visual flair and thanks to him the film sails to a safe place. He tried to give a lighter and at times goofy tone and it mostly worked but sacrificed the heart for that. The movie was fun when Momoa and Heard were on screen but it keeps going back to the boring family feud line and hence the tone gets messed up. Also it's 15 min too long- 6/10

On a brighter note this movie makes Justice League look like a 'made for tv' film. James Wan

thanks for the review Pavan90! I'll admit that I've become pretty hyped for this one (the extended footage trailer looked so ridiculous & over the top that it just might be entertaining as hell) . Some of my friends and I are planning on seeing this in IMAX opening night. Can't wait!

Oh honey, I'll be giving this one a miss as there's something fishy about it... Nicole's in it? Surely all that plastic can't be good for the Ocean...

Why isn't anyone talking about how it has the exact same plot as The Princess Diaries: a young man/woman is caught between royalty and the mundane world, the lost child of an unaware kingdom. They must come of age, make their monarch parents proud, claim their right to the throne and keep their integrity. The big task, of course, is proving to Julie Andrews that they're worthy of their legacy.

It was a pretty exhausting experience. James Wan (one of the most weirdly overhyped modern entertainment filmmakers) thinks that the way to elicit the most excitement from the audience is overkill. Everything is cranked up to the highest degree - the amount of globetrotting, the amount of CGI, the amount of fights, the amount of digital beams of light every goddamn where. I got tired of this movie, and it's almost two and a half hours long (another example of overkill)!
That's not to say that it doesn't have its moments of fun. The terrible dialogue is sometimes so ridiculous and cheesy that you can't help but enjoy it, the action sequences are not the greatest in the world but have a reasonable amount of enjoyment to them. And when the film occasionally goes nuts, it's fun. For instance, I enjoyed the climactic underwater mess of a battle with everything being so completely overcranked and overstuffed that it turned into some sort of strangely pleasing entertainment. But it's overall kinda dull. Momoa is quite enjoyable as Aquaman but this is not an involving story. It's one of those 'they have to go there so that they find the thingy that will lead them there and then they'll go there to do that...' kind of adventures. Honestly, I much prefer that long trailer - it has all the fun things about the film but is so mercifully shorter!

Just got back from it . I was entertained by it for the most part but I can see where a lot of the negative reviews are coming from . It features so many ridiculous/over the top moments that I just went with it lol and it was visually really cool at least . The underwater city was pretty dope to see on the big screen . generous 7/10

I expected the film to be fun like the trailer too, but it went on for too long, which I wouldn't have minded except I agree that overall it felt sort of dull. Jason Momoa was great though, and I also liked Amber Heard too especially her powers. In theory, I think the "they have to go there so that they find the thingy that will lead them there and they'll go there to do that..." could have worked for me because there were certain parts I did like, but it also had some of the worst parts. Like I knew that whole romantic scene was coming and which beats it would hit, but even then it was so ridiculously cheesy and not in a good way for me. The worst thing though was Manta being involved in that part. Totally unnecessary, well his whole character really was, but especially beyond the opening, I felt that his character added nothing of value except for setting up the sequel. Also Manta has the worst origin story ever, imo. Boo hoo! I didn't give rat's ass about him or his dad. In fact, I was like, "hell yeah, Aquaman" at that part.

HOLY SH_T
I can't believe Wan managed to outdo himself again This is seriously the most fun i had in theaters this year.
A pulsating throwback to the McTiernan and Cameron era of. Blockbusters James Wan may actually be the best tentpole filmmaker working right now.

He literally channeled Spielberg in The Adventures of Tintin in the Sicily sequence. This is a bona-fide return to soul in blockbusters.

He literally channeled Spielberg in The Adventures of Tintin in the Sicily sequence. This is a bona-fide return to soul in blockbusters. I'd say he literally stole from Spielberg... But that's fine, the chase was okay - it's just that I wasn't really that invested in the story to really be fully entertained by it. I'd even say that the idea with wine spears was really good and fun but it was used way too briefly and the slow-mo screaming made it much less exciting. My thing with the action in the movie (and with the movie itself) is the same I had with "Furious 7" - instead of exciting it felt laborious. Maybe because of the overload of it, maybe because I didn't really care about the participants of the action sequences. And I think soul was never really gone from blockbusters. It was always there, in the good ones Btw, what an honor to get commented by Michael Avenatti himself!

Pretty bad, visually neat. but there is exactly 1 line of inspired dialogue in here and of course it's Patrick Wilson talking to the fishking, So much cringe it hurt. and some dude kicked his own door in when there was no reason to, not important it just laughably sticks out

Another DC disappointment. Well it is not a castrophy or anything but it is the one DC film I had the highest expectations for because I really like the titular character. The result was a corny, and even for fantasy standards unrealistic (yes.. I am talking fantasy realism here) CGI overdose. Okay, what I liked: Jason Momoa who has a great sense for self irony and comedic timing. Casting him in this role is one of the most creative and inspired decisions and it pays off. He is truly great and part of the reason why Aquman is one of my absolute favorites of the DC cinematic universe. But not even he could save the often awful dialogue this terrible screenplay offers. Another thing I really liked were many of the actions scenes were very well put in scene (save for all the slow motion moments). Also the first half of the film really promised a great fantasy tale with its own mythology. I gave up on that thought in the middle part when many things, motivations and actions just became ridiculous ( and yes.. again for fantasy standards). The ending was an overblown CGI fest (with some really nice visuals ... not the effects, those were mediocre, but the imagary was nice). I really liked the score and loved the soundtrack decisions which were top notch. About the other actors. Amber Heard was better than I expected but I could imagine many other actresses who probably had given her role the bite it deserves and was intended for. Nicole Kidman was fine but she obviously did it for the fun (yes she gets to kick some asses which was delightful) and of course the paycheck. But having her here gave the film something majestic. Willem Dafoe was very boring - or bored. I always felt he was not really feeling good about being into that CGI mess. His facial expressions made you believe that he is constantly thinking of doing awful things to his agent. Dolph Lundgren was fun and Patrick Wilson servable as a villain. Oh and that gets me to another thing: Black Manta is probably the most useless villain in any comic adaptation ( except maybe Paul Giamatti in the second Spider Man of the first Spider Man reboot). It was fun (yet overlong) as long as it lasted but caused many head shakes from me.. and not in a good way.

This is my 2nd favorite DCEU movie after Wonder Woman, not that that’s saying much. I don’t know if this was a good movie, but I was entertained. I was either having genuine fun or laughing at how stupid and bad things were but I was entertained so that’s something. Wan does pretty good here, love the way he shot the action scene in Italy and its got some cool visuals but it’s largley just kinda another superhero movie. Jason Momoa is decent although he and Amber Heard have zero chemistry, the plot including an attempt at a twist is super predictable, the younger actors playing Arthur resemble Jason Momoa but cant act for shit, and the two villains are bland and forgettable. Oh and don’t get me started on that shitty music like Pitbull’s Africa and the weird sitcom score during the “comedic” desert scenes.
Willem Dafoe and Nicole Kidman were great as usual and I hope the paycheck they got for this can help them work on better projects.
I really wish some of Atlantis could’ve been explored more like the lobster people just show up at the end to have an excuse for a battle and we barely learn anything about the hideous humanoid fish people.
Still, I know I sound critical but I would recommend if to anyone who’s interested. The kind of movie that’s fun to watch drunk or stoned with friends.

By default, its the second best DCEU film. That’s not saying it’s great. It’s derivative, overlong, and it’s messy.
But whatever, it was fun. It was really fun, and I’ll take whatever scraps of fun I could get out of 2018.
