Best Supporting Actress: Regina King - If Beale Street Could Talk She's sweeping. Amy Adams is currently trying to digitally add herself into the THR roundtable.

He does make sense, but he needs McCarthy to be nominated as well, unless the movie shows up in other categories. Why, though? I do think she'll be nominated, especially if he gains more and more momentum and ensures that the film is watched by enough voters, but Best Actress is shaping up to be the most competitive acting category this season while Supporting Actor is the exact opposite, so I think he can pull through even if she ultimately doesn't make it, especially when the film itself also has Screenplay traction. I haven't seen the film but it seems like a two-hander. I expect both to show up, but I would be surprised if he won without her being nominated along.

Not really seeing how Grant in a fine but (by all account) small film or Elliott who is not that good or even major in his film is beating a category fraud film memorable turn in a movie that people love that got an A+ from audiences and is a much much bigger deal - I know he won 2 years ago, but Ali still has much more things in his favor it seems to me.

I still think Ali is winning but Grant is his biggest competition.

You really underrate the fact that he won just two years ago as a potential hurdle for him. Mahershala Ali is a fine actor, but are they really poised to give him two Oscars in three years, especially when there are a fair amount of Oscar-less vets in the race against him getting raves on par or even surpassing his? I do think Ali can nab some prizes along the way, particularly ones he missed out on in 2016, but if you're looking over the pros and cons of each contender, Grant is really the one who has the most pros. The only thing against him, really, is whether or not his film will be seen by enough voters, but Fox Searchlight is doing a damn fine job of keeping it in the conversation, especially as he and McCarthy are both hard on the circuit right now promoting it.

Really happy for Hawke who I never particularly liked much - its the performance of his life and he won't win an Oscar for it, but still its great to see it rewarded. Hawke & Schrader did the actual hard work that deserves awards - Schrader conceived it, wrote it (and wrote a great script), directed it, ad Hawke embodied it.
That's exactly what we want to reward every year really......

Hawke is not fucking around. Neither is A24. They're coming on strong with Hereditary, First Reformed and Eighth Grade. Crazy how such a small studio can manage such smart campaigns.

Funny that this time last week, people thought A24 had dropped the ball hard this year. I mean, every year it seems like they're going nowhere but they're always stronger than predicted. Lady Bird was a suuuuper strong campaign, but what they did with Moonlight was phenomenal. That's why I wouldn't surprised at all to see First Reformed or Eighth Grade doing great with awards.

2018's Tiffany Haddish. This was very surprising. Very shades of Cameron Diaz's win in 1998 for There's Something About Mary... Do y'all think Gaga, Close, and Colman split the votes?

Why does New York always have the most boring winners?

And Best Film too. NYFCC went big with Roma.
And I'm not sure LAFCA will disagree this time.

So there we have it. Roma is the best overall film, but not the best foreign film, of the year. Seems they really wanted to give Cold War its due.
A bit surprised at the Favourite shutout, but I don't think any of the Best Actress contenders are truly hurt by Hall's victory. Every now and again someone random and left-field gets a mention, but Hall has a horrendous studio behind her. Don't see that happening.
Grant and King are obviously off to a good start. Hawke seems poised to sneak into the race, but at whose expense? Gosling? Malek?

NYFCC like to go with cerebral films like that, and it's a worrying thought that not even Olivia Colman managed to win Best Actress.
I think Hawke is in instead of Gosling. First Man and Ryan need some critical love now, or they will be crushed by the competition.

...........and the big winner is..........Netflix. The most impactful development in American movie since.........um............sound?
So this is the biggest prize yet for them right, unless I'm forgetting something?
They've planned this all beautifully and it could easily steamroller going forward too - Roma, Lisa Taback and Martin Scorsese. Historic times........

I'd say the development of color cinematography, the appearance of CGI and digital cameras/editing equipment have certainly been more significant for American movies than Netflix. I mean, they're doing some good things but most impactful since sound is a bit too much.

I mean, they're doing some good things but most impactful since sound is a bit too much. Well maybe but think about it - everything you named are technological innovations and bound to happen in time but Netflix is rather unique - a combination of that and actual finance and supportive of artistry too - who has done more for established artists and new filmmakers than they have just in this short period? It's closer to what United Artists was intended to be actually. Cuaron's going to get his movie placed in the hands/eyes/minds of more people at once than he has ever had prior - more than filmmakers could have ever dreamed of for the CGI or digital editing tools in those films that couldn't be seen like that. Scorsese too and he got to make it very expensively his way without interference. More than "some good things" to me and more important to me than all of CGI personally but yes your mileage may vary on that. Gamechangers is all I'm saying..........
