The 15:17 to Paris (2018) -- You ever seen a crayon drawing made by a three year old that they think is SO GREAT and they show to everybody, and you nod and smile and congratulate them and you are genuinely happy that they made something that they feel special even though it is no different from any other drawing by a three year old? Well, that's what this movie made me feel for that made this. 3/10
Beginners (2010) -- Well, that was a surprise. A laugh-out-loud, feel-good romance movie that works because it is willing to probe the darkness a little bit. I think it loses the way a bit towards the middle (when Oliver and Anna move in together and their arguments are depicted in montages), but it gets back onto its feet quickly enough. A real charmer. Oh, by the way: The Dog in Beginners > The Dog in The Artist. 8/10
Dying of the Light (2014) -- A by-the-numbers, idiotic thriller that was taken out of Paul Schrader's hands and this really pissed me off... until I saw pieces of Black, Schrader's attempt to recreate his own vision. And then I realized that it was going to be a bore no matter what, so whatevs. 4/10
Winter's Bone (2010 rewatch) -- This movie gets better every time I see it. It's like a post-apocalyptic Western myth, with Ree as the epic hero breaking down under the weight of her journey as she gets mired ever deeper into this world of monsters that she knows is more a part of her than the escape of Army life she dreams of. I can't shake it. 10/10

The Kindergarten Teacher (2018) - goes from stupid to stupider to unwatchable nonsense. Maggie Gyllenhaal keeps it from being a total waste of time. 4/10 BATHROOM DOORS DON'T LOCK FROM THE OUTSIDE.

BATHROOM DOORS DON'T LOCK FROM THE OUTSIDE. Especially at a damn hotel. That’s some kind of code violation! I have a lot of problems with this movie, but I do have to give props to Maggie for keeping it from going entirely off the rails. She managed to sell that concept so well. Better than two of the leading Best Actress contenders I've seen this year, at any rate.

Auto Focus (2002) - twisted stuff... goes from bizarrely entertaining to awfully depressing and Schrader handles everything incredibly well. Amazing Dafoe performance and easily the best performance I've seen from Greg Kinnear. 8/10 Totally agree and hope you catch "Light Sleeper" as soon as possible if you haven't already.

Amazing Dafoe performance and easily the best performance I've seen from Greg Kinnear. 8/10 I liked it a little less (I just can't deal with Kinnear, ever) but it is a good piece of work - I don't know how to take a Schrader film that he didn't write - like this one in particular is odd because if anybody was made to write it's him (or Toback) and I'm sure he wrote some of it etc. Anyway, this story is one of the dark side of Hollywood stories that I always thought could have been spun off each other into something greater - the Wonderland Avenue part of Boogie Nights (or Wonderland), the murder-suicide of Gig Young, the Auto Focus story etc. - always thought there was a movie you could make of these and other stuff and interweave it into a larger and tragic whole. Sort of like another version of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood or Hollywood Babylon etc.
