Just watched the first episode. Off to a pretty interesting start. This might be the best work Jessica Biel has ever done. I wonder if she'll get any awards recognition for this. Also nice to see Bill Pullman again. So far, he did solid at making an empathetic character. Hopefully Christopher Abbott gets a lot to do because he's super underrated

At this point (from just one episode), all I can gather is that her upbringing by religious zealots had something to do with it. But I'm interested to see where it goes.

Saw the trailer and thought it looked really promising. Plus I love Bill Pullman so I plan to start it soon.

Finished the first season tonight.
I lied it. Improbable as it was, I definitely got sucked into the mystery and the twists actually were genuine twists. Biel and Pullman deserve a LOT of credit for making this work as well as it did. Pitts and Erbe deserve some love too, but it's definitely the Biel and Pullman show (both best performances from either I've seen).

I'm a few episodes in to the first season and it hasn't quite hooked me but I'm going to keep going. That song is killer. Heh.

I thought S1 was pretty good until the final episodes. Best thing about it is Bill Pullman. His performance operates under a deep plane of discomfort, especially during scenes, any small talk or w/e, where he's forced to introspect. He keeps his personal self reigned in and has to keep moving forward in the (or any) investigative process. That and some unique traits like the finger kink make him quite an interesting lead.
S2 I found better in every way - until, again, the last few episodes. Besides the flashbacks (which are just convenient padding), the mystery is actually mysterious and pervasive and possibly occult. Director/exec producer of the show Antonio Campos effectively uses ideas he's already tapped into: the cult commune in Martha Marcy May Marlene which he produced, and the "evil kid" angle (he's been developing an Omen prequel for years since before this show). Pullman is reluctantly put into a deeper personal space bc of the new setting (his home town) and the age of the main suspect (same age as when his past trauma happened). But the revelation of S2 is Carrie Coon, an actress I really didn't care about until now-- her performance is remarkable. Rarely has a character made me switch how I feel about them so constantly. She plays the role at such a challenging, sly, exact place between conniving and sinister....and charismatic and affecting.... and she's in some ways heroic and sad too.
But the show isn't the easiest to recommend bc of the extreme awkwardness of S1's later eps, and generally both seasons' ending eps lose candlepower - they become too standard, they overexplain, overuse flashbacks, etc. Really dig S1's ending shot, though. And I like how the show talks to the roles we end up playing in our lives.... Biel's discomfort in the role of mother/wife, Pullman's detective, Coon's commune leader....

I'm just not big on shows with these weekly reveals/massive red herrings, but this doesn't feel like Broadchurch yet so I'll stick with it. The flashbacks are quite disturbing/intriguing, so I'm curious to see where this leads to.

I really loved the first season as it turned out as one of my favorite shows last year. I love twisted crime stories and this is just exactly it. All episodes offer new twists, new conclusions and always when you think you figured it out, there is something new that comes up or everything is turned around. "Julien" is no difference. When you see the first episode you would never imagine what the outcome is or where the story will take you. The Sinner also lives from great flashback sequences that will bring you closer to the resolution. Something I also love, if done right. Bill Pullman was even stronger here than in the first season, where everything was about Jessica Biel's character. Here he faces his own demons and we see a lot of new characteristics of his character. Carrie Coon once again proves herself as one of the most interesting and versatile actresses. She really has a very unlikeable character here, at least on first sight. There is a great development in her character. The true revelation however is the performance by Elisha Henig. He totally understands to portray a character that is either creepy, innocent, disturbed or looking out for help. Its a great mix and a difficult task for a young actor and he fulfills it with his natural charm and brings it to the point. We also watch Tracy Letts, who is always great, Natalie Paul, who also turns into a great performance and Hannah Gross at the top of their game. I really look out for a third season. Very thrilling, moving and full of tense. 8/10

I didn't realize it was a limited series so I was surprised to see everything wrapping up in the final episode of season one. I thought it worked better than something like, say, Sharp Objects with the use of flashbacks. It was an interesting case and the cast was strong. Is the second season worth seeing? I've heard middling to bad things.

Carrie Coon is insanely good in S2. Idk how she missed a Golden Globe nom in drama TV, I'm guessing it's bc lack of viewers. It's one of the best performances of the year, movies/TV, period.

Up to the third episode on S2... Pullman is seriously undervalued.

Up to the third episode on S2... Pullman is seriously undervalued. He hasn’t gotten enough recognition for his work here, which is probably the best performance I think he’s ever given. I remember being really happy when he got a SAG nomination so at least there’s that.

I've spoken quite a bit about Pullman (who is just getting better and better), but the cinematography is just outstanding.

Just finished the second season which I loved even more than the first. I recommend it if you're into crime drama/mystery series. I liked the twists or reveals in the story as things developed.

S3E1 was pretty good. With the Matt Bomer character, it's already either too obvious or a smart misdirection. We shall see. Bomer perf actually quite good - haven't liked him in anything else. The Sinner usual - his character is starting to crack as uncomfortable in his roles - as teacher, husband, expectant father.
Don't know where it'll go from here or where it can go, actually. S2 set-up was much better and creepier, more mysterious and extensive too. Sticking with it for Pullman - who it occurred to me is, as an actor, a terrific sidelong-looker.

Didn't know it was back. Pullman has sadly been horribly robbed twice for this show and I foresee a third coming.
