Saw it early tonight. I make no secret that I greatly dislike Illumination, if not because they make bad films, that they just make aggressively mediocre ones consistently, and this is no exception.
Credit where it’s due, Cumby is clearly having a ball in the title role, and the chemistry he shares with his dog Max make for not only the best sections of the film, but Max is far better than any character from The Secret Life of Pets. And despite often only vaguely appearing Seuss-like, the animation and the sometimes brilliant silent humor consistently steal the show.
But it’s clear watching this film, and how they kind of botch the Grinch and his reasons for hating Christmas, that they just don’t get the intent of Seuss’ original story. At least Ron Howard’s film managed to keep the satire of Christmas’ overbearing ubiquitous touch and the alienation that comes with it. In spite of its faux feel good ending, it feels like it’s glorifying that commercialization he made commentary on, and it feels by its very end like a product made solely to exist. I like a breezy film, but this is over so quickly, it’s thoroughly in one ear and out the other, and makes no effort to truly flesh out the world surrounding the Grinch.
And gee, I wonder if there’s some new character from The Secret Life of Pets 2 this movie wants to shove in our face?

Elfman score any good? Always had a soft spot for Horner’s.

Elfman score any good? Always had a soft spot for Horner’s. I have to listen to the soundtrack on its own to get the full picture, but it’s Elfman, so it’s quality stuff, just not his most inspired and at times falls into generic territory. Basically along the lines of Meet the Robinsons.

So, I had much longer thoughts on this movie originally, but then my laptop shit the bed, and I lost all of my original text. So, here are my expanded, truncated thoughts on The Grinch.
