The documentary is forcefully edited, and Macdonald was granted access to a treasure trove of never-before seen images and family footage, but the overall result isn't nearly as effective or as haunting as Amy (these documentaries were inevitably going to be compared, right?). The film lacks cohesion and often posits contradictory arguments (in one breath, it celebrates Houston's sexual confidence and fluidity, and in another, argues that the sexual abuse she suffered under Dee Dee Warwick led her to question her sexual identity). American excess and racial tension are two ideas that are constantly presented, but Macdonald never really expands on this beyond interwoven imagery...
