It's very good, but the right film won the best foreign language film Oscar.

Not nearly as big a fan as some people. If I recall, a lot of the issue for me is that I liked the Spanish Civil War parts so much that I couldn't buy into the fantasy stuff. It just didn't feel real with how gripping the war parts were, and I think finding the fantasy sequences to be at least as real as the "real world" parts is the key to liking the film. Then the ending I always hate when movie endings do the "bait and switch" where they make something look like make believe and then throw in some inexplicable last minute clue to be like "Oh look, it is real!" IDK if that's a traditional part of Latin American magical realism, but it's better to just leave it ambiguous. I think I have it rated a 6 or 7. Like I said, I did like the war parts and it is a very impressive production.

One of those movies I really wish I liked more than I do, because the premise is really cool and Del Toro seems like a very sweet and genuine guy. Both times I've seen it I've come away underwhelmed, unfortunately.

It's a lovely, beautiful film. The whole thing is told with such passion and delicacy, bursts of imagination perfectly contained by a confident directorial hand. Equal parts magical and brutal, it manages its tonal balance in spades, creating a wonderfully detailed world for itself without getting ostentatious about it. A charming piece of magical realism.

I like how Del Toro puts a dark fairy tale in front and contrasts it with post war Spain. The Devil's Backbone is ever better though.

It's the best thing Del Toro has ever done, but I do think it's somewhat overrated. The ending is great though and packs quite the punch.
