I fucking love this movie so much.
Every time I pick up something new and each time I think something a little differently. Not just a masterclass of horror, but just a masterclass in general. Some might write it off as an effects based visual horror (who would also be very wrong) but it's the psychological aspect of who's who that I think truly makes this a timeless classic.
I still don't know how I feel about the ending. The gasoline theory makes sense, but... well, there are some holes in that too. MAN! When a movie really has you over the edge of your seat after so many viewings, then you know you have a favorite.

A terrific film and maybe the best makeup effects in the history of cinema.

I didn't love it the first time around, but I think it's one of those movies that have such a profound staying power that you'll never forget them. It didn't really scare me, but it has such a slick way of getting under your skin that it's almost the definition of creepy, and this has a lot to do with how Carpenter directed it.

On a recent re-watch I was in awe of the blood-testing scene... certainly one of the best scenes of all time. And I believe it's what convinced Carpenter to direct the movie when reading the script.
On a random note... I kind of wish there was one more great character actor in the cast. Like an M. Emmet Walsh or any of the three legends Carpenter worked with the following year -- Harry Dean Stanton, Robert Prosky, or Roberts Blossom.

As perfect as the ensemble already is, I'm inclined to agree that any (or all) of those guys would've been great additions. Shit, man, now you got me thinking about mine and Fish's Predator story set in the Yukon during the 1800s. Imagine all four of those guys in their '80s prime, snowed in at a cabin with the likes of Kurt Russell, Keith David, Brad Dourif (as the guy who sees the Predator in the snow and returns covered in his buddy's blood, babbling about invisible beasts), J.T. Walsh (as the token racist) and Graham Greene.

It's fantastic. The dog kennel scene is still one of the scariest things I've ever seen in a movie.

I just showed it to my girlfriend the other week. She was hesitant going in but loved it as much as I did by the end. The effects still look terrific for the most part and I love the way the film builds tension and anxiety. It takes a disturbing premise and reaches its full potential with it. One of my favorite movies of all time. The ensemble is fantastic and it still terrifies me to this day.

Watching it again... Bennings when coming to get Childs to get the flamethrower isn't limping despite being shot earlier.
GOD. I love finding new things in this movie.
