I, like most of the people on here, think she’s had a really spotty track record as of recently, and I also get irritated every awards season, when her allocated slot could go to someone either fresher or more deserving, even if I’ve still liked a good deal of what she’s done.
I don’t think what she’s done recently has so much as touched her best efforts in the past, but I’ve still enjoyed quite a bit of her turns. I love Doubt, I love Julie & Julia (sue me), I thought she was a blast in Into the Woods. On the one hand, it may initially strike me as someone being overexposed that’s rubbing people the wrong way... but then you remember that August: Osage County happened. I think a lot of her better recent turns have been ones with no awards traction, and seeing her slide into a slot for her insufferably artificial efforts only compounds the issue.
But that kind of begs the question: Part of me always wonders if she makes it look easier than it actually is. Not to say she doesn’t have genuinely terrible efforts, but she’s still capable of a damn good performance. Do we tend to take her skills for granted?
What say you?

No, I don't think so.
It only seems that way on here because the one person who doesn't like her is extremely vocal about it.

Absolutely. If her reputation didn't precede her I believe her recent slate of work would be appreciated more. On the other hand, it doesn't help that she keeps landing roles in middling projects which undermines goodwill right off the bat. Speaking for me, I know I usually have a bias towards performances in films I like.

Well, the answer is yes and no. First, she's gotten so much acclaim I'm inclined to say who would care what "we" here think anyway?
But the deeper truth is awards/success never matter as assessing the depth of talent - at all, period. The simple truth is there are not many great American actresses who have had sustainable careers in film - there's some but there's more males who I could easily point to as being special.
Streep for me is more comparable in talent to the great British class and the French class of the 70s (and Blanchett). I rank her as the 2nd greatest screen actress ever and that's in world cinema - I mean, people on here freak out about how great Nicole Kidman is because she's not wearing eyeliner (I'm kidding but....). It must be an awful thing to be an actor anyway - people constantly think they are able to discuss acting and they would never presume to know what goes into say editing, directing or composing a score. They think they know acting because we "act" every day - I have to go into my office in an hour and act like I give a sh*t about it after all.
That's not the same thing of course to what an actor does and so in a sense all actors - especially the very greatest - get taken for granted, because to truly process what she does seems silly to most people for "pretending". So, it's like a sports headline in a way, Tom Brady's talent gets taken for granted too - the stats don't have anything really to do with the talent.

I don't know, man. Let's get all other American actresses over 60 together and ask them. I don't imagine that any of them will be too busy to chime in considering they get offered good work only once in a blue moon.
Look. I love Streep, and I think she's by far one of the most skillful, versatile actresses we have today. She's at the top for a reason, and I might sort of see the argument that this board sometimes overlooks her talent because she's just so ubiquitous that it stops us from praising her as much as we would otherwise.
But as far as people who get taken for granted go, she's at the bottom of the list. She gets showered with praise and award nominations every time she breathes in a remotely buzzy, well-received film, sometimes at the expense of stronger, fresher performances from women who could benefit from the spotlight a hell of a lot more than she does. 21 Oscar nominations is the exact antonym of "getting taken for granted".
And more importantly, she's basically the only Hollywood actress above the age of 50 who never has a dry spell and never has to worry about getting work. Barring European actresses like Isabelle Huppert, who works mostly in her native France, pursues completely different types of roles and has the added advantage of frequently hopping from one language to another, Streep is basically unparalleled in terms of consistency and output. Which admittedly isn't her fault; I'd be saying yes too if I had all those A-list filmmakers offering me the highest-profile roles for performers of my gender and age group. But it does make it very hard for me to say that she's underappreciated in any real, relevant way.
In the past three (03) years alone, Streep: *got nominated for 2 Oscars, 2 Golden Globes and a BAFTA Award; *won an Emmy and a career achievement award from the HFPA; *starred in a Best Picture nominee from Steven Spielberg; *also worked with Jonathan Demme and Stephen Frears; *had a supporting role in a hit sequel that grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, and will certainly be followed by even more success with Mary Poppins later this year; *filmed upcoming collaborations with Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Greta Gerwig and Jean-Marc Vallée.
On the other hand, Glenn Close, the one A-list Hollywood actress in Streep's age group who's getting solid visibility this year, is celebrating landing her first note-worthy screen part in 6 years (in a film that's receiving mixed reviews outside of her performance and was written and directed by people that nobody in this board can name without looking up), will most likely go home a 7-time loser and zero-time winner come Oscar night (if she doesn't get snubbed entirely), and has exactly one project currently in production: a voice role in a Netflix animated show.
So yeah.

Yes. She is easily the greatest living actress (as cliche as it is, it really is the truth), and she deserves every accolade she gets (The Iron Lady withstanding).
ALSO: August: Osage County is honestly one of my favorite Meryl performances, I've never understood the hate for that one. Yes, there are tics and she hams it up, but it's how the character is supposed to be portrayed.

If someone where to video her pooping in a public restroom for 20 minutes, I'm fairly certain that the performance would get nominated for an Oscar and just how brave of a performance it was.

The industry? Not at all. Us? Maybe our expectations are too high whenever she’s on screen?

Streep is pretty much a screen goddess and has given us Sophie's Choice. As much as I loathe The Iron Lady, I don't ressent her 3 wins because that's pretty much how many Oscars she deserves (she was win-worthy Adaptation. and good enough to be top 3 in Doubt and Devil Wears Prada).
With that said, her career post-Doubt has been very underwhelming to me. She's (was?) going through a very weird combo of weak filmography choices (Into the Woods? Really?) + getting way too much praise and accolades for said weak choices (a nod for Into the Woods? REALLY?) + taking the spot of cooler, better options all those times. Her only two performances I truly enjoyed this decade are Hope Springs (ironically, very overlooked and underrated) and The Post.
To think Adams and Bening in 2016, Stewart in 2014, Gerwig and Larson in 2013, Dunst, Swinton Theron and Olsen in 2011 - just to name a few - were all snubbed in their best moments (some were even denied a much deserved welcome-to-the-club nod) in favor of Streep in her most mediocre hours is absurd. I think Streep went through a very lazy time these few past years, which is okay 'cause you don't have to always be all-time great. But the fact that she's always reward just for breathing in a somewhat prestige picture is frustrating.
In her defense, tho, I believe she's going back to her old days form again. Last year she was in a Spielberg movie, and now she's booked Scorsese, Gerwig and Soderbergh. And there's also her exciting comeback to TV in Big Little Lies. I hope for the best cause I know she will deliver, and it makes me happy that she's either getting offered parts in better/more interesting projects or becoming more ambitious again.

Which is why she wasn't nominated for her critically-lauded collaborations with Robert Altman, Stephen Daldry, and Jonathan Demme, right? And you've used that "story" before!

Damn near every other year she's up for an Oscar for a critically acclaimed performance. She's near-universally held as the greatest actress ever even by people who couldn't name five films she's in. She receives more praise and attention than every other actor alive and she does so at an age where all her peers are struggling to find any decent work and the ones they do find usually have an extremely limited audience. If there's any inclination towards overcorrection with people badmouthing a performance of hers, it's fairly reasonable given just how high Streep's pedestal is. She's legitimately the only actor I can think of to have sustained exposure and plaudits without encountering any significant backlash.

Which is why she wasn't nominated for her critically-lauded collaborations with Robert Altman, Stephen Daldry, and Jonathan Demme, right? Well, to be fair, she got nominated for her other Oscar vehicles the years that her Altman and Daldry collaborations came out; were that not the case, she probably would've been nodded for A Prairie Home Companion and The Hours too. So she missed to make way for herself those two seasons. Not sure if that should count. And as for Ricki and the Flash... I honestly don't know if even the people who worked on that film remember that it exists.
