Fuck. I can’t remember the last time I saw something synonymous with “powerful” or “impactful”. This movie hits you like a brick to the chest. I may be using this phrase a lot, but it really is timely as hell, but its message of self-acceptance and identity rings loud and true. Amandla Stenberg is finally given a role where she can really shine, but she’s backed up by solid supporters like Russell Hornsby, Regina Hall, and Lamar Johnson. Would have liked to see more of Issa Rae and Anthony Mackie but they still leave impressions. George Tillman Jr’s direction manages to elicit feelings of tension, rage, and fear, but also real moments of love and hope. A lot of it feels so real, not only in the really tense moments, but even when Starr is just interacting with friends and having to code-switch in the different parts of her life. I recommend the hell out of this. I don’t usually do those noms that y’all do for movies, but here I go: Best Picture Best Director Best Actress - Stenberg Best Supporting Actor - Hornsby Best Adapted Screenplay 9/10
