Rewatched this today and I still like it quite a bit. JGL is great in the lead role and he completely nails his big breakdown scene towards the end. Anjelica Houston does great work in a limited role as his mom and Anna Kendrick limits her quirks enough to be quite lovely. Rogen annoyed me more this time around although he had a few nice one-liners. Think the movie manages a great balance of emotion and levity throughout.

JGL's best performance, by far. There's one scene in particular (it's been a while) that really hits me hard... When he's with his mom pre-surgery and starts getting scared saying what if he dies. Fucking feels. Have to strongly disagree on both Rogen and Kendrick here. Loved Rogen, hated Kendrick.

Makes my top 10 of 2011 - both hilarious and poignant in equal measure and manages to juggle the heavy stuff with humor effortlessly. JGL is really good here, and I think the whole cast is aces (Bryce Dallas Howard is good playing the awful girlfriend, though I was still weirdly attracted to her). I especially love the scenes with Philip Baker Hall.

Recently re-watched it myself... holds up pretty well.
Great balance of humor and heaviness, JGL and Rogen are great... and some scenes do hit really hard.
7.5/10

Barely misses my 2011 line-up, but it's because it was such a strong year for me. JGL blew me out of water with his performance, I miss seeing him in leading roles. Also, love Rogen, don't care for Kendrick.

One of the few times I could actually stand Rogen (normally despise him ) . JGL was aces in the lead and there are some gut wrenching & heart warming scenes in this without being too heavy handed. 8/10

Great film. JGL gives one of his best performances and probably makes my line-up. As someone who never cared for Rogen, I like him here. Kendrick is charming as ever.

Overall quite well executed and excellent performance by Levitt. Gentle humor, heart-warming element and the theme of friendship and truth evinced in this piece.

Really good. Nice balance of both comedy and drama, especially regarding such a heavy subject. JGL's best performance, and Rogen is pretty solid as well.

I love this film so much. I reckon I've watched it 4 or 5 times at this point. Also, the bit theycallmemrfish mentioned almost brought me to tears too. 2011 is one of my favourite years in film, and this one sits comfortably in my Top 10.

and how much of a gem this movie is. I rewatched it again last night for the first time and fuck me I love this movie. Balances drama and comedy so well. The acting is great all around too. That scene with Levitt and his parents near the end of the movie never fails to make my ass tear up. I really think Levitt deserved an Oscar nomination for his work here.

Thanks for reminding me to rewatch this. I haven’t seen it since release, but I loved it at the time. Thought the screenplay was robbed of a nod.

As a movie it's fine, nothing special and kinda forgettable. But it does bring up two points:
1. (500) Days of Summer won the ICC for Best Picture in 2009.
2. Remember when Joseph Gordon-Levitt was beloved on the old board, getting nods and wins for Mysterious Skin, Brick and the like, as well as routinely ranking as one of the best actors of his generation? Now he's pretty much vanished and I feel like a lot of that love likely has waned considerably.

I love it. It’s my #3 of 2011. That whole cast is on point, and for me, the most gut-wrenching scene other than what you mentioned is when JGL has that phone conversation with Kendrick.

I haven't seen it since release but didn't think much of it. The performances were fine but most "cancer movies" rub me the wrong way.

Good performances but it's a forgettable movie. JGL needs a new agent or something cause that dude has disappeared.

Don't remember much except being a little disappointed, but I remember the cast being decent (apart from Rogen who's grating like most of the time). I feel like I owe it a rewatch though.

Remember when Joseph Gordon-Levitt was beloved on the old board, getting nods and wins for Mysterious Skin, Brick and the like, as well as routinely ranking as one of the best actors of his generation? They were just jumping on the bandwagon. None of them truly loved him until his turn as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe made them re-evaluate not just his performances and career, but re-evaluate life itself. That he has never again reached a height so impossibly high, is the reason we don't hear from him much anymore.

I can never make my mind up if Black Swan or (500) Days of Summer is my most hated acclaimed film of the last 10 years. Didn't Black Swan win the ICC too? Yuck!!! That old board sucked on occasion.
Personally, I still love Joseph Gordon-Levitt, he's great, except at hosting Roasts, he sucks at that. He does appear to have fallen out of vogue, but I remain a fan.
