Just want to let you know that I am indeed reading all of these and always appreciate these write-ups. I don't get the time to watch many of them, but I have always enjoyed the ones that are recommended.

Brain Damage is an odd one. I have a friend who swears it's the most accurate depiction of drug addiction he's ever seen in a movie. I don't have experience being addicted to anything, so I can't exactly verify that, but I've always found that really interesting.

I saw Phase IV a while ago but I remember it being solid, a lot of interesting macro and superimposed visuals - and all those insects, definitely will give you the jitters.

I remember hearing critical raves about November at the time of its release, but then it faded back into obscurity.

This is probably what my last 90 minutes just looked like:

I was able to catch Lady in a Cage and Blood on Satan's Claw earlier this week. I liked how Lady in a Cage expanded on its concept just through the editing and constant sound, making such a simple setup feel so chaotic and torturous. Caan was especially unnerving, particularly the chilling moment where he declares he'll never have children because of how fucked up the gene pool would be, like he's completely insane but just aware enough to know how irreparable his insanity is and has long since surrendered to it. And damn, I did not see it coming how shockingly gruesome the climax is. I nearly jumped out of my seat during the eye gouge, and then actually seeing the aftermath of Caan's death. The fact that Jeff Corey's death scene was entirely obscured from the audience's vision moments earlier makes it so effectively unexpected. Maybe I'm crazy but Blood on Satan's Claw, while definitely high on creep and gore factor, I felt also has this weird sort of comforting familiarity to it, like just an old-fashioned classic vibe that I really like. That score is amazing, and Wymark's performance feels like it almost transcends the material. Joe Dante talks about it for a couple of minutes here:

It's not an especially bad film, but the PSA type elements ultimately get in the way of the tension. It keeps telling you DON'T DO THIS instead of letting the character truly learn it for herself.

I need to watch this. I love Ciaran Hinds. Never knew it had horror roots.
