I'm not sure if any of you guys have seen this yet? I was able to see it in Seattle over the weekend. I thought I might share my thoughts. The reactions to this film at TIFF were decidedly mixed, but I really enjoyed it. Though American in origin, it feels very European - languid, deliberate pacing allows the actors to shine. And boy, do they ever. Sevigny is pitch perfect as Borden, alternating between a quiet simmer and a madwoman's desperation with complete fluidity - just her very gaze could freeze steam. Stewart once again astonishes as the pinched, determined Irish maid whose tutorship under Lizzie soon becomes physical - very credible accent work - she acts with stirring resolve. I don't suppose I'm spoiling anything by saying there's a double ax murder ( ), but during this scene, both actresses do some of the finest work of their careers. Jamey Sheridan, Fiona Shaw, and Denis O'Hare are all deliciously malevolent in supporting roles. Kim Dickens doesn't have much to do as Lizzie's sister, but she's always a welcome presence. Any way, if you've seen it, share your thoughts. If not, what are you waiting for?

I was supposed to see this over the weekend but life got in the way, unfortunately. Why do you think it had such mixed reactions?

I was supposed to see this over the weekend but life got in the way, unfortunately. Why do you think it had such mixed reactions? My guess is because it's such a well-known, well-worn story - apart from the love affair between Borden and her maid, the film isn't really saying anything new about the legend surrounding her. (For instance, Lizzie Borden was a well-known shoplifter in Fall River, MA, but the film doesn't explore this psychology at all, or even mention it.) The grisly murders aren't actually shown until deep into the third act, so I imagine that North American audiences will find the build up to the inevitable (we already know what's going to happen!) rather tedious... I expect reception to be much warmer in Europe, where the story isn't really known, if it's released there (I'm guessing that Stewart's popularity ensures this? Not positive.).

You'll be the first to know my thoughts once I see it. For now, though, I'm still patiently waiting for a release date.

Going to see this today! Will report back.
Edit: Stewart is quite good, I think it's the first thing I've seen her in where I actually enjoyed her (to be fair, I haven't seen much), Sevigny is ridiculously good. I really enjoyed this. 8.5/10
