It was a decent horror adventure for children. What I liked about it was that it was quite old fashioned in its execution and story telling. As an adult it was still relatable in many ways and although it had some lengths I must say it was somehow fine entertainment. You see that Eli Roth has his roots in adult horror and some scenes might have been a bit too scary for the young audience, at least that what I gathered from my fellow cinema audience which mostly were children. Jack Black was pretty good in the leading role and absolutely right to play that role. He overdid it a bit at times but it was a fine performance. Interesting to see Cate Blanchett in such a rather secondary role. She was a bit underused, except for one fantastic scene/Monolgoue she had. Still it was nice to see her doing a quirky and funny character like Florence Zimmernann. I wished for more of Kyle MacLachlan, but it was an inspired casting choice. I wasnt too fond of the leading kid Owen Vaccaro. I mean he had some good moments but generally the performance was a bit weak. Sunny Suljic gave the better child performance. The effects were good, the score nice and the production design very beautiful. Its not a film to remember but it was a decent gig for kids.
