At least in interviews these guys are kinda lugubrious: Sean Penn, Tommy Lee Jones.....

Yeah, she was definitely cooler in the 90's - early 00's. Everything changed when she started going out with Brad Pitt.

Frankly, I think too many actors and directors don't take themselves seriously enough, if that means striving for greatness and really trying to avoid wasting time doing garbage. I end up losing investment in their careers.

This is often said as a negative, and I've never understood why. Why should I take an actor/director seriously if they don't take theirself seriously?

Aronofsky really thinks the pseud shit he cranks out is deep and it really comes across in his movies, Mother! probably being the funniest example of this.

This is often said as a negative, and I've never understood why. Why should I take an actor/director seriously if they don't take theirself seriously? to me the implication is that they take themselves too seriously in comparison to the work they create. most of my favorite directors take themselves very seriously in some way or another

Steve McQuuen was the first person I thought of. Why are a lot of people saying this? I don't really follow him, so I'm just curious.

Which ties into the same thing, because people would answer with Sandler or Bay if they claimed they were making high art in interviews.
