I recently read the book Anything you Can Imagine, about Peter Jackson and the making of the Lord of the Rings. It caused me to seek out and start watching Peter Jackson's filmography.
I have yet to complete my rewatch of the Desolation of Smaug or the Battle of the Five Armies, so I'm not including those for now.
The Fellowship of the Ring 10/10 Return of the King 9/10 The Two Towers 9/10 The Frighteners 8/10 An Unexpected Journey 8/10 Heavenly Creatures 8/10 Forgotten Silver 8/10 The Lovely Bones 7/10 King Kong 7/10 Meet the Feebles 6/10 Braindead (Dead Alive) 6/10 Bad Taste 3/10

I like all three LOTR movies about equally, not sure how I'd rank them.

6. King Kong - 5/10 (only one I don't like. Watts is a face of her era. And outside of Mulholland Dr., her continuous daisy routine will be forgotten fast)

Love them to death:
Heavenly Creatures - near-masterpiece, blends bad taste with tragedy, romance, and a genuine love of film. Braindead - possibly the funniest movie I have ever seen. Glorious nonsense, though the third act is overlong. Forgotten Silver - one of my favorite mockumentaries. The Fellowship of the Ring - one movie where the cliché "movie magic" actually fits.
Good:
The Two Towers - strong epic entertainment. The Return of the King - good moments but bloated. King Kong - ditto.
Crap:
The Hobbit - obscene. The Lovely Bones - laughably, tragically asinine and insulting.

I think Tolkien is a great writer, and the core of what he was trying to say with The Lord of the Rings was (relatively) faithfully adapted on screen by Jackson. It's been quite a while since I have seen them, and I am sure I'll like them a bit less nowadays, but I think those original three films are pretty well made. I don't really have any complaints that I can think of beyond its occasional comedic moment, that doesn't always gel well with everything else. The people in this thread who seem to hate on them seem to have weird opinions on fantasy films in general, and I don't really get it at all. That said those crappy Hobbit films really tarnish the image of the original films and expose the incel-type fans of the series who cling to franchise for the most superficial reasons. Those Hobbit films really suck... kind of make me afraid to revisit the Lord of the Rings as well.
King Kong is really weird. Bad Taste isn't that good. Heavenly Creatures is great.
