I really love Visconti's L'Innocente and Huston's The Dead. These guys had it right up 'til the end.

I think Robert Bresson and Tarkovsky's farewell films (L'Argent and The Sacrifice) are their best overall - and they made some great stuff before.
Particularly interesting is Bresson who with his 2nd to last film, The Devil, Probably made a completely current, zeitgeist capturing film in his mid-70s far more modern in feeling and technique than anything he had done before.

After many years of beneath him, depressing films Sidney Lumet went out on a very fine goodbye note witb Before The Devil Knows You're Dead.
