There was a lot of hype around her in 2003-2006. She was thought of as a promising rising talent one day hoping to take over Hollywood. In addition to being the 2nd coming of Bellucci...... an overly appreciated Greek (not using that word literally) beauty. Didn't quite...... work out. She really dived after Casino Royale. Vikander kicked her ass in less time than Green needed from '03-'06 and already won an Oscar.
I personally thought she was fun in those two 2014 blockbusters: 300 and Sin City. Could be because she showed boobs, but then "the movie where she showed boobs" doesn't exactly narrow down which movie you're referring to

She's very talented, very hot and comes off as charming/lovely person in interviews. Her performance in "Penny Dreadful" deserved every award there is but even though I enjoyed some of her films ("Perfect Sense", "White Bird in Blizzard", "The Salvation") from her post-Casino Royale career, the truth must be told that she has a (mostly) shitty filmography.
I thought maybe her Polanski film and that Alicia Vikander drama would help her to get better roles but then they turned out to be disappointing films as well. That said, I'm very much looking forward to "Proxima".

On top of being a stunner in the looks department , she is also very talented as an actress. Loved her in The Dreamers, Casino Royale, Kingdom of Heaven & Penny Dreadful Looking forward to seeing her in Dumbo .

She's got "it". Mad crazy sex appeal, actual talent, and intense watchability/screen presence. I don't think she's the world's greatest actresss or anything (but she's good), but she's more deserving of major stardom than many.
But maybe she has too much of "it". I've noticed there's actually a preference for blander, more uniform actresses in Hollywood to advance to the top rank. That's why your Felicity Joneses and Alicia Vikanders and whomever is starring on The Crown seem to get pushed.
I have a theory that it's harder for women like Green to really advance to proper movie stardom because she makes most women feel uninteresting and boring. That's tough for them to relate to. Green is this super exotic type with an interesting accent, and intense sex appeal. Green would probably have a better career if she was just a smidge more boring, in looks and personality. I feel like she'd have been a huge star in the 1940's or 1950's, when audiences wanted their female stars to be more fascinating than "relatable".

Probably the best Bond girl ever, and even though her filmography is pretty dire overall, she still manages to be memorable by chewing the scenery in shit like 300.

I've liked her in everything from what I've seen (even Dark Shadows where she's quite hilariously campy). It's annoying that Based on a True Story hasn't been released yet in the US - it's opened in at least 35 other countries! Good amount of reviews single her performance out there.....

She's stunning, of course, but she's also got a great wealth of talent that, for whatever reason, never managed to hook her into the public consciousness. She's terrific in Kingdom of Heaven (moreso the extended cut), she's the only salvageable thing about Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, she was excellent in Penny Dreadful . . . but so many took her for granted, and it felt like so many people were trying to make her a thing that it sort of backfire.

I think the reason for her not being a bigger star is a choice on her part. In the five years after Casino Royale she made one Hollywood/American film (The Golden Compass) prior to the beginning of her relationship with Burton in 2012 when she did Dark Shadows. I seriously doubt it's because she wasn't getting offered Hollywood parts after CR. She seems like the type who would rather make small movies in Europe for the most part.
Anyway, I think Casino Royale might be the only thing I've seen her in. She legitimately is extremely good in it, despite the "genre film" label. Very beautiful too.

I thought she was going to hit it big after she followed up The Dreamers with Kingdom of Heaven and Casino Royale. She appears to balance smaller films with big budget Hollywood ones... but doesn't seem to pick the best of the latter. She's quite good in Cracks and great in Penny Dreadful which plays to her strengths. Still one of the best Bond girls and I'm curious to see where her career continues to go.

I wish she gets cast more in good movies. She has the looks and talent but never got big.

Scarily talented and breathtakingly beautiful. She's still my #1 choice for an Ava Gardner biopic.

An EXTREMELY talented actress with a wasted career. After The Dreamers she basically just did: - Blockbusters where she plays Femme Fatales (Casino Roayle, Kingdom of Heaven, Camelot, 300, Sin City) - Bad or average movies where she is one of the few good things (Cracks, Womb, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children etc)
The only thing about her career that was really good and where she could show all her talent was Penny Dreadful, but she received no recognition for her acting and the show was canceled.

I rewatched 300: Rise of an Empire. She has the it factor, and I can definitely see why someone would tag her as their main girl or something.
Can kinda see what pupdurcs is saying that she doesn't fit the mold of an Emma Stone or Jennifer Lawrence - more awards accessible, public images. Green simply doesn't appeal to everyone. She is hot, but the masses of America finds Stone and Lawrence hotter by their definition which simply means more relatable to their more average sensibilities. Not a shade on Lawrence or Stone because I like both, but obviously Green is not the first name that comes up when people want to cast the main roles of the year. Example is Dunaway in the 70s... obviously they were gonna give her Network that was clearly the biggest Hollywood film of the year. And in every year that goes around, she's probably outside of that general 1st table circle club.
I also agree with one of the posts here that she never took over Hollywood despite the initial hype is because some of it is her own choice. After Casino Royale, she didn't make much of a notice for 5 whole years until she found Tim Burton. No way her pace just stopped like that, she probably had better things to do than films.

urbanpatricianI think her being French has something to do with not being the first choice in Hollywood. Not to mention, she's almost 40, not exactly the same age span of Stone and Lawrence.

Every role she takes is interesting on their own, but she brings this...life into her characters, and makes them seem so real in a way that no one else could do.

Her ability to portray genuine warmth and utter coldness is remarkable, she has that air of haunting mystery around her that just makes her all the more alluring as a screen presence, she's of course flat out gorgeous...And yet it seems like filmmakers don't really know how to use her and what she could be capable of. She's a rock star but they don't seem to notice. I want somebody like Luca Guadagnino (who does seem to spot those qualities) to do something great with her. Gregg Araki certainly did tap into something interesting with "White Bird in a Blizzard".

I think she's kind of a ham, and when she isn't hamming it up like a clown... I find her pretty boring. Something about her face gets on my nerves. She's kinda funny lookin', more than most people even.

She never played the game, the moment when she was supposed to become a star, I remember articles/articles describing her as sort of the femme fatale, and she even admitting that smoke compulsively, in other words, not the young starlet that audiences want.
Also her bad luck with projects, I’m sure for the most part they look great on paper but she’s been in downright awful movies many times. Also, her looks doesn’t help, such an exotic beauty, DPs haven’t figured out how to frame her, she always seems miscast, like from a different universe, the closest probably Dark Shadows and Penny Dreadful, she needed a wacky wold to exist.
I don’t think she’s a good actress, the one time that completely worked, White Bird in a Blizzard, her role was too short, but you would think Polanski would do many favors to her but in his film, she was rather one-note.
