There has never been another movie that I've had such a drastic change of opinion on. When I first saw it several years ago I found it decent enough but was somewhat unimpressed. Currently it's battling for my #1 favorite from Kubrick. It's a remarkably atmospheric, weird, and dark film. I really love it.

I've posted many times on it and always enjoy talking about it but I hate the film and think its a mess - the only Kubrick I dislike. I think it was a sad way for his career to end really - banal, pretentious and I know that's a word people hate but for me it fits and I think it's poorly made too - the scenes are jarringly edited at times and at other times there's this odd solemnity in a fluid style that to me doesn't mesh or express anything. Hate the cold look of the film too, its maddening "score" - the acting apart from Kidman is wan and amateurish. To this day it cleared the audience in a sold out 500 seat theater more than any film I've ever seen - people just walked out in droves on that opening night. But I will say its a cinematic Rohrschach test and many love it and see things in it that I don't and many whose opinions I respect do too and have argued passionately for it (in real life not just here - some of my closest friends love it and it comes up a lot ).

I absolutely love it, one of my all-time favourite films (landing somewhere in top 30), and my #2 Kubrick after Dr. Strangelove. This one's all about atmosphere and mood, which is palpable throughout the entire film. I find it almost entrancing, particularly that legendary monologue from Kidman. She's amazing, but I also really like Cruise as well.
I've only watched it twice, and certainly can't say that I understand all of it. There will surely be many re-watches to come, and I can't wait.

Love the everlasting hell out of it. The dreamy atmosphere, the Jungian duality at play, and the very evocative ideas running through it regarding fidelity, sexual power dynamics, and capitalism. There's a ton to say about it (way more than the dull and superficial "omg Illuminati!" analysis of plenty), but I'll leave it at that.

I think it's a big ol' sloppy mess. Amazing imagery that evokes a lot of cool ideas, but I just don't think it coheres well at all.

But the movie is doodie.

i could call it a masterpiece but it's obvious it's not the full out exposure Kubrick wanted it to be. also, some parts didn't quite make sense. editorial issues and stuff. too bad cause it left me floored in scenes. good thing you can get an idea about how deep executives are willing to go to protect things. Hi Pash, nice to hear from you. I was worried hearing about fires near Athens, I hope your beloved ones are all fine. To reply the thread, I find this movie is quite unoriginal. It reminds me of the video of the song Self control, in the cover version of Laura Branigan.

Currently rank it as my favorite Kubrick & it's up there as an all-timer for sure. One of the most atmospheric films ever made as well as one of the most visually magnificent while taking a relatively minimalist approach. The costume and set design are of course aces and the simple use of music is also brilliant (that piano is haunting as fuck). Truly one of the most haunting things I've seen; an eerie journey that makes every second of its long running-time worth it.
Also, best Christmas movie of all-time.

That creepy piano note gave me goosebumps .

Cruise is really good and I like the production design. But it's basically just Cruise getting mad, running around New York for a while, and then going home, but maybe it was all a dream? It's okay.

That is just about the shallowest reading of this film I can imagine, but sure. I know you're a pretty big Kubrick fan, Count, maybe give this another shot some day. I didn't think much of it at first either, ended up doing a complete 180.

When people talk about it thematically they tend to focus on the nature of reality or view it as Kubrick's comment on sex and relationships. I haven't read and don't remember finding anything about it super interesting thematically.
