One more reason why Mann is the man. There was nothing like Mann in that period, he had some real invisible juice that allows him to make these nihilist odysseys. This movie is real sharp, real slick, has a trippy backdrop, has Tom Cruise at his strongest point, and Foxx as a reliable complement..... he always likes to pit two lead males against each other in a battle of ideals and personalities. (much like what he created with the legendary DeNiro and Pacino in Heat ).
This simply continued his long string of great films which seemed poised to make him a legend. Mann knows how to make a movie. Period. His films feel like expert productions only coming from someone who knows what he's doing. He's a productionist, a screenwriter (though Heat and The Insider is the best example of his screenwriting talents), a director, and knows how to appeal to the audience. This probably his purest entertainment piece... though I can see that a little with Miami Vice too.

This is a slickly directed, superbly acted, and nail-bitingly suspenseful film. The ending is satisfying and the scenes leading up to it are heart-pounding.

Y'all can keep Heat. This, to me, is Mann's finest hour. Everything about it is so fucking airtight.

It's great. I really enjoy most of his recent action films, but I wish Tom Cruise would do more role like Vincent. He's a terrific villain.

Terrific film and it's still surprising to me that how Cruise didn't get awards attention for this.

I too love this film quite a bit. As others have already have pointed out, its very suspenseful/ brilliantly acted/ directed. You can cut the tension with a knife. Cruise was scary good as the mysterious hit man . Also loved how Mann captured the night life of LA . so damn good!
Definitely my fav film of 2004 and one of my favs from the 2000s . 10/10

Yeah don't really get the effusive praise although I like it a lot - top 10 of its year.
It gets worse and more convoluted as it goes along, the ending is not great to say the least........... the screenplay is the problem - which sucks because he's first and foremost a great writer himself - when his films go shakey is when he's shooting someone else's script (as he is here) or rushing one of his own.
But still his directing choices are inspired .........8/10 - it's not on the level of Thief (much less Heat come on) but it's more Mann which is a good thing......

It's excellent. Gets a little blunt at times with its philosophies, particularly that final sequence when Mann for some reason felt it necessary to remind us about the earlier interaction with Cruise's spiel about how long his body will ride the rails undetected, but its got a few of the best directed sequences in Mann's career. Foxx turning on Groove Armada's "Hands of Time" as he rides the freeway and the setting sun illuminates a glass building is absolute cinema.

I rewatched it recently and honestly I think it’s my favorite Michael Mann film, even better than Heat. I will say that I think it peaks with the car crash scene (which is a superb moment when we see Max turn Vincent’s nihilistic philosophy against him) with everything that comes after that being a bit silly and not quite as compelling as what came before (the callback to the story of the dead man on the subway felt really forced and I wish the film didn’t feel the need to directly mention it, but let the viewer recognize the callback on their own). But there’s still a lot that works really well. The lead performances by Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx are outstanding and the film is really effective as a character study of these two. The direction and cinematography are beautiful, one of those movies where the location really feels like a character of its own. The nihilist elements might be a bit on the nose for some but I thought it really added to the movie and developing Vincent’s character, showing how this guy can rationalize killing people for a living. And for the majority of its runtime, it really kept me on edge, the sense of danger felt real. I was terrified by Vincent especially by how quickly he could put on an affable and harmless persona before showing his true nature. Wish we could get more crime films like this (hopefully Widows will fill that void).

Wish we could get more crime films like this (hopefully Widows will fill that void). Wouldn't bet on it. The only philosophy McQueen knows is the kind called empty. But I agree with a lot of what you say. Cruise seems to think that killing people is no big deal.........and it's interesting once again to see another interpretation of a maniac killer's abnormal mentality. (Like in Se7en or Zodiac and the serial killers' psyche) It's fun to see a clash between Foxx and Cruise. Foxx trying to throw Cruise's philosophy against him and ultimately defeats him using the very thing that has made Cruise undefeatable and invincible all this time.

No one shoots night as well as Mann does. Best performance by Cruise, best performance by Foxx, perfect direction, magnificent cinematography. It and The Insider are Mann's best work, imo.
